Can you folks also help me compile a rough list of roundhouse demolitions since 1999 or so?

I've got

Hagerstown, 1999
Redondo Junction, 2000

Eric, I'd buy you a pound of Eastern N.C. pulled pork barbecue if you'll write about on the history of Roundhouses! It's a great subject, and I know a neat place for a publication party! jim

Sterling, Colorado; Battle Creek, Michigan, part of St. Luc, Montreal; Nebraska City; possibly Holdrege, Nebraska (need confirmation for sure). I'll probably think of more. Hugo, Colorado came close, but is now under slow restoration by a dedicated team of locals. A fair number remain in the northeast, but few original locomotives remain to put in them.

I've received reliable reports from three trusted sources in Delaware that the former PRR roundhouse out behind the Wilmington, Del. PRR electric shops (now Amtrak), between Amtrak and NS's Edgemoor Yard, is being demolished as we type, or is gone completely now.

But mind you, that only counts as idle gossip, so it isn't to be taken seriously. <:-/

You might talk to Bob; it seems like he is really interested in them, from the number of times he posts about them.

The SP roundhouse at the Bayshore yard in San Francisco was taken down around 1995, was the second of two on the property, now both gone.

The battered shell of the Bayshore roundhouse, plus another rectangular building, were still standing when I went by on the train in 2001. There has since been a fire, so don't know the current status. Lots of photos at link below:

The NERAIL discussion list reported that the Worcester, MA roundhouse was demolished within the last 6 months. Also, while not a true roundhouse (but from the steam era), the enginehouse in Essex, MA built by the Eastern RR was also recently demolished.

I don't have any further details, nor can I confirm either.

This would be the concrete roundhouse near the wye and lead from Edgemoor. Last time I looked it was levelled. It had been increasingly derelict for years.

There was a wood roundhouse South of there, at street level, on the East side of the viaduct and about halfway between Wilmington and West Yard. It was disconnected from track for years and had been a warehouse for decades. It may have stopped being a RR engine facility when the Wilmington Locals were electrified. That one was demolished in the early 1990's.

Note the Reading Co. (W&N) roundhouse was brick and on the other side of the PRR/AMTK tracks.

Phil,

The one you speak of 1/2 way between Wilmington and West Yard was not a locomotive shop but a car facility used by Harlan and Hollingsworth in the manufacture of rail cars.

Check back to about October 6, this year in the postings here. Bob Yarger asked about the Illinois Central roundhouse in CR. He had a link to a photo of it.

Wasn't much of a "roundhouse", only two stalls and an office 'bay'. It was torn down a year or so ago and the turntable removed and the pit filled in. Not sure of the chronology, but I think it was last used by the Chicago Central, since having become the Canadian National.

I do remember seeing a CC engine on the turntable and the table in motion sometime in the late 1980's or early 1990's.
