David Wardale's book, "The Red Devil and Other Tales From The Waning Days of Steam" is going to be back in print!

Although the title of this book might lead you to think it's a collection of fiction stories, that's not what this book is about. This is a book for serious lovers of steam - those of you who want to know more - LOTS MORE - about the technical side of building, designing, modifying and operating steam locomotives in the waning days of steam. The chapter on the ACE3000 / 614T testing alone is worth the price of the book!

This is a very different view of steam power that makes you think about whether or not we scrapped steam too soon. It's fascinating reading about the state of steam power in the late 20th century.

Dave Goodheart will be handling this book. Call 800-482-1522 to place an advance order with him for your copy. The first printing of this book sold out FAST, and this second printing will only be a small run. So don't wait too long, or you'll miss it.

Not emphasized in Melvin's post is the sheer density of this book--hundreds upon hundreds of pages of thin paper and fine print, making this book the best value per word out there. Be warned, it's highly technical at times (remember your engineering texts?), but there's just enough anecdotes and enlightenment to be highly entertaining and educational as well. A must for anyone cursing the diesel and lamenting steam, even if the eventual verdict seems a hung jury still.

Rich:

Thanks for the info; I whole-heartedly second everything you say about the book. By the way, the book has already been printed (and sold out) twice, so this is either a third printing or Dave has found a stash somewhere.

By the way, if you like(d) this book, another famous steam locomotive technical book has recently been translated into English for the first time and published. This book is "La Locomotive a Vapeur" (the Steam Locomotive) by renowned French steam locomotive designer Andre Chapelon. The book is 659 pages, and includes information on various steam locomotives from all over the world. Additionally, a section has been added to the book covering Chapelon's planned series of post WWII locomotives which would have combined the best features of French and U.S. practice, and another section has been added covering Porta, Wardale, Girdlestone, and others who have continued steam locomotive development to the present day.

See my page at the URL below for more information on this book.

Good Steaming,
Hugh Odom
