Supposed to have been converted to 2-6-0 by ?

and then sold 4/47 to Stelco (Hamilton, Ontario) became their 20.

Where and for who was it a 2-6-0?

Probably converted by Midland Terminal Rwy. (Colorado); they had a bunch of these Army 0-6-0s that they bought surplus in 1945 and converted to 2-6-0s. The designer of these locos, Col. Howard Hill, allowed for this modification in the original plan for the 0-6-0s, but I think the MT engines were the only ones converted. Based on my time firing New Hope & Ivyland #9 (one of the USA 0-6-0s), they really started hunting and nosing above 15 mph. I would imagine the lead truck gave them the needed stability to run faster than 15.

Thanks for the info. Looking for a photo (scan) of one of these Midland 2-6-0's esp. ex 4062.
Any leads appreciated.
BTW the builders photo of USA 0-6-0's in LIMA book is the 4062!

Stelco found the engine derailed a lot and they converted it back to 0-6-0. Suspect rough track in steel mill may have added to the problem.

Here's the three MT 2-6-0s blasting up to Cripple Creek. Nos 64 and 66 were Limas, No. 65 was an Alco. They had a few other Army 0-6-0s also, but went out of business (1949) before they ever got used. My understanding always was that all the MT Army locos went to the Norfolk & Portsmouth Belt Line, but that could be incorrect.

That could be true. In the early 1970s when I was at fort useless Iwent over to the belt line looking for parts tools etc. I didn't get much but the cmo told me that they got the 060s from other roads and not the army. Also some were 260s. regards bb btw I don't remember what road they came from.
