It has been almost 2 years since construction started, and 12 years since the project was supposed to have started, but there is light at the end of the tunnel and the dedication is only a few weeks away.

Volunteers at the Travel Town Museum in Los Angeles started moving equipment around this past weekend in preparation. Both operating locomotives, the EMD Model 40 "Charlie Atkins" and the California Western's Baldwin RS-12 #56 were used and were assisted by the nicknamed "TT #2", our Case skiploader.

We'll post the offical press release for the dedication as soon as it's available.

What did it cost to build that shelter?

I visited Travel Townn last summer and saw the building in progress. Whatever it cost it will be worth it; protecting a fleet of historic steam engines, cars and equipment.

There is an 1860s engine there that has got to be quite rare and a steam dummy from San Francisco that is one of only three in the USA.

At one time it was budgeted at $1.2 Million. I know it went up due to redesigns due to new seismic rules, and other hoops that City buildings have to comply with. But I haven't kept up with the money side of the construction. It has been enough fun to make sure we got water and air piping where we wanted it, and we got the right size electrical outlets and dozens of other little details.

I'm sure all of the details will come out in the press packets that will be available in a few weeks.
