Locked in a building in Michigan. There was a cruel joke a few years ago when the PAs came back from Mexico- some wag put them up for sale, getting us D&H fans even more excited. Trouble was, that he wasn't the owner.

Joshua (or anybody else) , can you confirm that some assertions I've heard over the years?

1.) Castolite is still the owner and is aware of the significance of these engines.

2.) They use pneumatic MU control, which makes them incompatible with everything else, except each other.

3.) One of the engines has a scored crankshaft.

I can help with the third one. One of them always had crankshaft problems, certainly dating back to D&H and perhaps NYC/Monoghela so you're probably right.

Jim Boyd has confirmed to me that Castolite (i.e., a specific individual) still owns both locos, and yes, they are both QUITE safe from scrapping. As for the rest, Boyd quotes the owner as saying "They safe and don't eat much, and I'm in no rush to do anything with 'em." There are allegations that a home already awaits the pair (or possibly two homes for one each) in the future, say, upon the owner's death or retirement.

It's not quite true that they won't M.U. with anything else, but you're unlikely to find any running locomotive it will M.U. with today, save for *maybe* some of the SMS gang of Baldwins. Even when they operated on the D&H in 1974-77, they were M.U. "orphans" and ran restricted to passenger excursions and the Binghamton-Sayre transfer job, or solo as pushers on Belden Hill.

Incidently, I used to watch them through the bathroom window of my in-laws house, next to the tracks in Castleton, VT. There is far more freight on that line today, and even Amtrak. Our older enginemen here did not have much use for the Sharks and their eccentricities.

The Baldwin "Sharks" are owned by John Kunzie. He has been bugged by so many railfans over the years about the unit that he will no longer entertain any discussions. They are kept locked and secured in an enginehouse on the Escanaba & Lake Superior in Michigan. He also has ex-PRR doodlebug No. 4668 and a wooden chapel car locked in the same building, as well as other pieces of equipment. He started amassing equipment back in the 80's to start his own tourist railroad but it never came to pass. Best guess is that the units will someday go to IRM, based on his past alleigances. Bob R.

Please, lets not feed off too many rumors. I am on the Museum Board and there have been no discussions of ANY type on this subject. Of couse, IRM consistently considers new acquisitions; but we and Mr. Kunzie are not involved in any way at this time.

What were they? Or was it more of the stuff that babyfaces were famous for.. shorting electricals, etc...
