What railroad is this spoken of in the Flimsies piece below? And from there did the FM switcher originate? I suspect the US Army?

As the article states this is the old Red Springs and Northern Railroad which was operated by the Laurenburg and Southern until their only customer, a pulp wood yard, moved out about ten years ago. The line has been idle since but a group of motor car enthusiasts have leased the line and run their motor cars on it for several years. They have been working on returning the line to service as a tourist railroad for the last three or four years. I wish them luck but the line is not particularly scenic and I am afraid they will find out like so many others have that just because 72,000 cars a day go by on the interstate does not mean it is easy to get a few of them to stop.

As for the locomotive I suspect this is one of the FM units overhauled by Johnson Locomotive perhaps ten years ago in Pickens, SC for the Port Authority but I am not sure.

This was an Atlantic Coast Line branch. According to a Trains Magazine article(4/88), there is 12.5 miles of track. It was sold by Seaboard System to L&S in 1984. The line once ran from Parkton,NC to Bennettsville,SC. Most of the SC track was (in 1988) being operated by Aberdeen & Rockfish as the Pee Dee River Railway.

The A&R still operates the portion of the line from McColl to Bennettsville, SC as the Pee Dee River Ry.
