This locomotive is on display at the Great Plains Transportation Museum in Wichita, Kansas. It was placed on display in 1957 in Railroad Park at Merdian and Kellogg in West Wichita. It was not well taken care of in its later years at the park. In 1977 the locomotive was moved to the Union Station Complex in dowtown. It was to be used as a display for the development of the old railroad station and the surrounding old town area. This project failed and the station complex was sold along with the locomotive to the local cable television group. It was then donated to the Great Plains Transportation Museum. The locomotive was taken to the AT&SF's north yard and the tender was taken off the locomotive and then the two were turned on the small turntable so the locomotive would face south when it was placed on display at the museum just north of the station complex. After the locomotive was moved to the museum it was sandblasted and a coat of 2 part epoxy primer was placed on it and then a coat of epoxy gloss black was applied. During the process of seperating the tender from the locomotive it was discovered that the buffer plate and springs were numbered for the famous Blue Goose. 3768 also has an example of all the various drivers used on the 4-8-4 northerns.

The locomotive is owned by the museum and unlike so many park engines that have ended up in collections it is complete down to the builders plates. It was missing one marker lamp and the headlight was damaged. The museum has another headlight in its collection and knows of another one in a private collection. The missing marker lamp was replaced by a private donor. The locomotive is moved by the musuem for display on the overpass in downtown several times a year.

Nice posting John, we're all very proud of the old girl; I was a college student back in '77 when it was moved from Friends U. over to Union Station and watched the move activities. Very excited to see the new UP baggage car and FP-45 #93 rolled out regularly on the overpass!!

Bob,
Maybe you or one of the Santa Fe experts can enlighten this steam novice on something I have notied that seems to be unique to that roads engines.

What was the smokestack " extension" designed to do?

Thanks in advance,
Bruce Pierce

The stack extender on engines like 3768 was used to improve the draft and put the smoke above the passenger cars not down on the roofs.
