I haven't seen anything posted about this, so excuse me if I've missed it. While in Eugene, Ore. over Christmas, I drove by the old SP pass. depot and was supprised to see some sort of renovation project underway. A freind told me that in fact the depot was being restored at a cost of around 1.5 million. He said he undesrstood that grants for the work had come for many different sources. I believe the depot is normally used by Amtrak. Anyone know the particualars on the project?

Bret,

There was an article in the paper on that a little while back. Seems the funding did indeed come through and the station will be closed for the next year or so with passengers using a temporary AmShack. The building is being fully rebuilt, new plumbing, parking lot, and all that good stuff. In the end it will look essentially original, but with a few nice upgrades. I think it's supposed to be completed sometime next year, but I may be wrong. Hopefully after Eugene they'll move on up the line and repair Albany, that little stop needs major help.

Happy New Year, Taylor

The Salem depot was recently completely refurbished complete with a new platform and parking lot and looks great.

Scott,

It sure does, I was in there a couple weeks back and it really takes your breath away, especially since it was such a hole before. I can rember when it still had spray painted swastikas on the walls, the lamp posts were all torched off, and you'd go pee in the bushes before using the bathrooms. They did a wonderful job, though I'm curious about what their plans for the old freight shed are.

Thanks, Taylor

Taylor:

Is that the very old wooden building just south of the current depot? I was under the impression that that was a former depot of the Oregon Electric which connected to the west and ran to Dallas and Independence, etc. Are there two buildings there or am I confused?

Scott,

I was under the impression the building was a hold over from the original Salem depot that burned in 1888 or something like that. It could be from the OE though, it's been under wraps for so many years I've kinda forgotten what it looked like.

Thanks, Taylor

Hi Taylor:
I have just been involved in an interestering converstation about this building. It is indeed the freight building (not sure SP or other) but will find out more in a few weeks. According to the people I was talking with, it was orginally on the north end of the existing Depot. There are no real plans at the moment to do anything with it only discussions. Only time will tell what is going to happen.
Hope to see you in Sumpter.
