New Steam in Oregon?

An interesting article on a group working on setting up an excursion line in the Willammette Valley. Looks like the 1785 is the prime candidate for motive power.

Ho Boy! There was nothing mentioned about the condition of the locomotive. And I sure hope the Cascade folks don't ruah in and buy a million dollar locomotive from the shortline!!

The 1785 is actually immaculately kept and has a volunteer local "caretaker" who keeps her in good shape. I know nothing of her mechanicals, but she is nice to look at. I believe she belongs to the city of Woodburn.

As we've learned at TVRM, there is no way to know about the real condition until the real pros, usually with engineering degrees, get at the equipment. We are blessed to have knowledgeable folks in Chattanooga...and I doubt this talent pool is readily available in many other places.

I wouldn't jump to any conclusions, they may actually have another locomotive in mind, hard to say. The concept for the operation is a good one, the area is very scenic and has a very good population base. The group seems a little in over their head, and there doesn't seem to be much actual railroad know how amongst them, but that can be easily fixed. Plus, they might be able to get Doyle and some of the boys from Brooklyn to take a look at the locmotive, she might be in superb shape. Or, knowing SP, in horrendously poor shape.

It would take less time and money to buy the operating SP Mogul that's currently for sale than to have this one restored. Then you have two!

I had been thinking of that, but how would you get it to Oregon? Can it be hauled in a freight, or would it have to be loaded on a flatcar or trailer or something?

#1744, like sister #1785, rides friction-bearing trucks. Therefore, it will have to be hauled via lowboy trailer [road], or via rail flatcar.

If they could move the CP Hudson type from Penn. to the Nethercutt Museum in California on a flat car I'm sure it shouldn't be any problem for a Mogul type!
