Baldwin Steam

What was the construction number, date, and additional details of the last steam locomotive Baldwin built?

I can't give youy the number of the last Baldwin steam locomitive which I believe was exported to India about 1953, but the last steam locomotive built for a US railroad was C&O 2-6-6-2 #1309. She was delivered in July, 1949, but she and her ten sisters were based on a 1910 design. In any event, you can see #1309 when the B&O Museum reopens.

The last steam locomotives built by Baldwin were c/ns 76039-76088, all 2-8-2s, 21X22 inch cylinders, 61-1/2 inch diameter drivers, built in 1955 for the Government of India road numbers 9100-9149. From the dimensions, I am certain that these were broad gauge (5'6").
As an aside, the next to the last steam order was c/ns 75584-75590, all 2-8-0s for the Ecuadorian State Railways. Some of these still exist.
The final Baldwin for use in the US was c/n 75503, a 2-8-0 for the Army as their No. 610, now at TVRM.
I would note that the Railway & Locomotive Historical Society publishes builders lists of virtually all U.S. manufacturers of steam locomotives (cheap too).

Thanks David, that's what my data shows too: 76088 was the last steamer and yes they were broad gauge. I didn't have cylinder and driver size, I appreciate the additional info.

That order would have been the last narrow gauge locomotives built; they are 42" Do you have additional data on those too?
My data show that 75590 R# 58 was rebuilt in 1981

Do you have a URL or e-mail to contact them? I'm way the heck up in the Yukon and finding data can be difficult.

I now have a complete Baldwin list from the early 30s and want to look at ALCO next. I'm researching the production of narrow gauge 2-8-2 MacArthurs which were built in 1000mm, 36" and 42" all with the same components from the same basic design.

Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum

Paper records are nice, but, does anyone have ALCO data already in spreadsheet format?

Yes #73 is. Here she is in Carcross Yukon last summer, fresh from the shops after a major refit. WP&YR wanted to order more 70 series in 1950 but Baldwin couldn't/wouldn't build any more so the WP&YR had to get diesels :<{

another candidate that has been suggested for the last steam engine built for the US is a little, I
think H.K. Porter 0-4-0 built for the St Elizabeth Hospital in Washington, DC. Mostly used to supply the coal fired heating plant.

She is or was on display at the B&O Railroad Museum in Baltimore.

Ah Steve,
Colour pictures of a black engine... Looks like you've upstaged me again. Guess I'll have to try a roll of Kodachrome one of these days and move into the 20th century.

But that means I'd have to use an exposure meter. Oh well, pass the Anscopan please :)

There is no possible way I can upstage you there. Anyway, I bet you shot most of the SinV photos in color and they were just duped in monocromatic form by the publisher?!?

1) "duped" may apply to the author but not the images
2) film used on that project was about half color, half b&w. It depended on what Walmart had on sale due to old expiration date.
