Found on the Park Trains list. Operating at an amusement park called Dreamworld in Australia. Said to be a 1917 Baldwin, I'm guessing it might have once been one of the WWI 4-6-0T light military railway engines sent to France, some of which later went to Indian sugar mills?

Was it originally one of the little side tank engines from WWI? It looks to be one, with a tender added.

In the site, the following info has been lifted:

4 (Reg Coulter) 4-6-0 Baldwin, cn#45215, built in 1916 Operational

With the C/N number, can someone confirm that was part of the 495 4-6-0 60cm gauge engines built for the British in WWI. If it was an American 2-6-2, I could use the C/N to confirm it from Richard Dunn's book, "Narrow Gauge to No Man's Land." But he only covers engines build for the American Expeditionary Force. He does list two references: 1) Davies, W.J.K. 1967, "Light Railways of the First World War: A History of Tactical Rail Communications on British Fronts." 2) Taylorson, Keith 1987 "Narrow Gauge at War" published in England.

Looking at the two photo in Dunn's book of the 4-6-0s, one French and one British, the steam dome and sand dome appear to be arranged like the British engine. Like many Baldwin products, both of them have almost identical running gear. The frame for the valve gear and the triangular plate on the cross head are very distintive.

Hi Ed and Bob,

I have all three references and can confirm, the loco is Baldwin 4-6-0T of class 10-12-D.

Taylorson states the loco was part of an order that left the Baldwin Works on 2/1917. The order covered builders numbers 45133-45236 inclusive. The locos were assigned WD numbers 1001-1104.

Davies breaks them down differently. He shows the engines with those builders numbers actually went out in 2 separate orders. The loco in question was shipped out in the second order on 3/17. Construction date is shown as 11/16. Locos 45183-45236 were given WDLR serial #s starting at LR 10002.

Davies shows that a total of 495 locos of this model were built. Could this have been the numerous class of 2' gauge locomotives ever built?

Well . . .

Depends on the degree of precision one speaks with. While a 60cm equipment can use 2 Ft gauge track with little if any difficulty, the 2 Ft equipment can't use 60 cm track. That 3/8 of an inch difference is "almost, but not quite." I have no problem with them being functionally equivalent, but as one Navy Captain I worked for use to like to say, "The devil lives in the details."

As of 2013, the Dreamworld Express train ride in the Dreamworld amusement park near Gold Coast, Australia no longer has its two steam locomotives. They were replaced by a steam outline model. The Perry locomotive of 1951 is now owned by ANGRMS of Woodford, Australia and back in operation. The fate of the Baldwin 45215 locomotive, however, is a mystery. Anyone know where it is now or who now owns it?
