Last summer on this Forum there was a thread regarding the latest edition of a Museum reference book that provided standard definitions for every man made object. This “definition” would be used for standardized inventory and control of a museum’s collection.

HELP! Does anyone on the Forum know or remember the Title/Author of this reference work. Thanks for your help!

The National Park Service uses "The Revised Nomenclature for Museum Cataloging: A revised and expanded version of Robert G. Chenhall's System for classifying man-made objects" by James R. Blackaby, Patricia Greeno and the Nomenclature Committee, published by AASLH Press.

It's not perfect, but it works.
