Does anyone know the status or work being done to the engines at Mineral or Elbe? Their website's roster hasn't been updated for a while so i was curious as to what has been done to what engines.
And does anybody know what's happening with #7 at the Camp Six museum in tacoma?

Last I heard...

Porter 2-8-2 #5 and Alco 2-8-2T #17 are holding down the fort.

Heisler #91 and Climax #10 need flues and won't run much, if at all, this year (got this second hand and it may not be accurate).

Shay #11 runs if needed.

The PoO 2 (2-6-2T) should be finished up this spring will run briefly at Mineral before going back to Willits.

Vancouver Plywood #2 (2-truck Heisler) is getting worked on and is hoped to be operable this spring.

Klikitat #7 (at Pt. Defiance) is still in storage, and will stay there until someone comes up with enough money to do the work that needs to be done.

The Mt. Rainier Scenic is planning several special railfan events this year so you'll want to check their home page regularly.

How about Lake Whatcom? Is their 0-6-0 still operable? Is the RR still running during the warm season?

I should update my web page shouldn't I?

The short version of the story is...

The 1070 has been out of service for 2 or 3 years now. It needs a substantial amount of work before the FRA will allow it to operate again. The Lake Whatcom Railway doesn't have a lot of resources and is family owned and operated.

During the "warm" season they operate with an Alco diesel leased from the Mt. Rainier Scenic RR.

Noticed your update did not include former Rayonier #70. Interesting bit of history on this loco. It was purchased at the estate auction of Mr. Maynard Laing, and I purchased many of his films including the Rayonier logging footage. In that footage are scenes of #70 being hauled away on an NP freight. Interesting how my Laing preserved the railroad on film, and liked it so much he bought one of the locos, or Lokeys as they called them. Are there any plans to rebuild this engine among the rest of the massive Mt. Rainier stable of engines?
Steamingly,
Greg Scholl

P.S. Videos are a means of preservation in their own right, yet they never get any mentions when it comes to R&LHS awards and such. As one producer once told me, the old stuff is historic, and the modern stuff is tomorrows history! Something to ponder,eh!

From what I've been told, there was at one time plans to restore #70 to operation. However I've been told that it is very worn out and would be very expensive to restore. Right now there are vague plans to at least re-assemble it and put it on static display at the Mineral Lake balloon loop.

Rayonier 2-6-2 #45 is currently being discussed as the next project (challenge) for the Mt. Rainier shop crew. I've been told that it's running gear is nearly identical to the running gear of the PoO 2.

2-truck shay, Rayonier #3, remains in a disassembled state at the shop. What, if any plans they have for it are unknown to me.

Absolutely! I have copy of "Rayonier" and it is the favorite in my small collection of steam vids.

Thanks for the reply. Looks like the Mt. Rainier is the new Rayonier with all those former locos.

Greg:

I don't see why R&LHS couldn't have an annual award for videos. I wonder if its ever been suggested to them? BTW, I have your "152, SUSPENDED IN TIME" video and think that you did a fantastic job on it.

Thanks for the comment...it was dear to my heart also beacuse we sponsored the photo special. That was a rarity since there were all L&N lettered cars, no diesel assist, and no water car. Plus it was an ex-L&N branchline. After that weekend 152 never ran on a mainline excursion, so glad we did it in retrospect.
I think we did something like 15 runbys for the day(maybe more) and we even made arrangements for some to get cab rides between runbys. One of the highlights was Carlisle where the old line(which we took of course) went down the street for a couple of blocks passing the old passenger depot on the right and the old freight house on the left. All those factors made it appear "timeless" therefore the cheesy title. Things sure were different in 1988, versus today, where steam excursions are concerned!
Sincerely,
Greg Scholl

I can give an update about the Klickitat #7 at Camp 6. We finally recieved some funding. I expect it will take a couple years before she is operatable, but we are excited that money is finally available to start work.

152 Runs on selected weekends from Memorial Day to the end of October at the Kentucky Railway Museum. in 1991 the museum purchased 17 miles of the L&N Lebanon branch from CSX. 152 is alive and well.

That's great news Ed! Last time I talked to Rick Bacon on the subject he wasn't too optimistic.
