The locomotive is one of the F-2 class 4-6-0's, the last of which was retired in the summer of 1953. Hardly any Rutland steam made it that late. The #201 and the RS-1's were delivered in 1952.

Some of the steam swtichers (one is in the background) did make it into late summer of 1953. So, that's the latest this could be, but given a best-guess, I would go with 1952.

Nice shot from a place I wish I could have seen in the heyday. Today it makes wanna heave: the site is currently a Wal-Mart.

At last years train show up at The Rutland Fairgrounds, I was flipping through a Rutland Railroad Company Annual Report from 1966 (IIRC), and was quite surprised to see the shopping center mentioned and pictured (as plans) in the book. I find it kind of sad to know that indeed, albeit AFTER they got out of the RR biz, that the Rutland actually built that building that now houses Wal-Mart!

When did the name "Rutland Railroad" as a company title finally die? Anyone?
