Since Train Fest 2004 at Dennison,OH is coming up, could #90 & 475 could venture there?

Although I am not Lynn I can most likely give you the same answer he would. Since both 90 and 475 arent main line steamers it would be much harder for them to travel great distances b/c they are freight loco's and arent meant for speed. I admit it would be a cool thing to see arive in Ohio under their own power (mmm..doubleheading!) but its a lot of ware on both of the engines that i don't think strasburg wants. If they were to go to steamfest 2004 they would most likely be trucked there. Again this is what I think, I'd like to hear what Lynn says about this also.

Regards
Brian

Remember that SRR is a for-profit company, and Linn has to answer to his board of directors and shareholders, just like any other businessman. He'd have to be able to explain why such a proposition made business sense for the company--and to say the least, it's hard to see how it would.

Trust me, it'll never happen.

And the Strasburg board of directors is reportedly composed mostly of elderly widows of the original VPs, many or most of whom have nary a rail-romantic cell of blood in them. I second Sean's comment. Though I would love to be proven wrong.........

I suppose I should weigh in on this one.

It's pretty unlikely.

In reference to another post in this thread, our board is getting younger all the time. We actually have some very talented and enthusiastic people on the board. Unfortunately, no matter what type of organization you have, it all comes down to money. Without funding we have no toys to play with. With no toys we have nobody coming to play on the toys and therefore, we have no money to continue in business. This is not a good thing for employees in particular who would not have jobs. Shareholders would not be overly pleased either.

We have a list a mile long of things that we would like to see happen at Strasburg. Throughout the years our directors have been railfan oriented, but they have always tried to curb their enthusiasm with reality. Often we have erred on the conservative side, and while that has hurt us at times, most of the time it has been a good thing.

One thing you can count on about anything - what goes up will come down. You must be able to survive and plan for the downs so you can get back up again.

I would love to see #90 or #475 go to Ohio. It just has to make economic sense.

Remember one other very important thing: Ohio Central is ALSO a rail in the business of making money, and this has to profitable for them as well. Every locomotive has to mean added insurance, no? The other aspect is this: to send both locomotives leaves only a single engine to take care of regular chores at Strasburg, and as Linn points out, thats their "bread-and-butter" as it were. Now the obvious questions: HOW DOES ONE BECOME A STOCKHOLDER? I take it this stock does not trade very often?

Strasburg? Until the company "goes public", it's basically none of our business. I've been told by people in the Lancaster area that "the corporation" exercises first option to buy back any shares offered (as do many privately-held companies). Other shares are reportedly passed from generation to generation--the basis for my comment about the "railfan" pool of stockholders being watered down over the years. (I strongly suspect that the railfan stockholders hold a majority, however! <;-) )

Ohio Central? Probably also privately held, as I fail to see how any pool of investment-minded stockholders could justify that extensive steam fleet, even if they thought oil was going to shoot to $500 a barrel. Typically, though, any time you see a "corporation" like that running a steam fleet, there is a sharp distinction made financially between the company ledger books and the "toys". A prime example in similar circumstances: The Blue Mountain & Reading/Reading & Northern.

Your right, 90 isn't much of a mainline steamer(but 1223 and 7002 were!) but would be cool to see just 475 running(Remember 475 going to Harrisburg for the shooting of Thomas & the Magic Railroad?). Have any other steam engines from the Strasburg's fleet ever traveled?

#4 came here under her own power from Birdsboro in 1964. My dad, mom and I chased it and my dad has movies of it. #89 ran to Lancaster in June of 1977 for the dedication of the AMTRAK station. #90 ran on the Jersey Central in 1967 double headed with another engine, I believe operated by Ross Rowland. It derailed on that trip. #972 has been all over when George Hart used to operate it.

Quote from Trainfest Website: "List of Historic Railroad Equipment Scheduled to Attend "TRAIN FEST 2004"

Other locomotives and equipment have been invited. Once they have accepted, they will be added to this list"

I actually have made a "hobby" of buying stock in shortline railroads and leased lines. As time has gone on I have been bought out of many of these, but I still own an interesting portfolio. I still would like to buy a share of the New York & Harlem, which trade about once every 5 years!

Linn,

When did PR 1223 go off-site for Hello Dolly? Was it towed or steamed to NY?

I work around and run AC's on a regular basis. CSX has de-rated all but 16 of their AC6000's to 4400 hp (actually 4700) for a number of reliability and performance reasons, low speed vibration problems and prime mover reliability among them. I read on-line that a mining operation in Australia that has 8 of them was experiencing horrible availability and reliability problems with theirs. CSX did go back for more heavy AC4400's (magnums to the fans) which seem to be working well, and have just bought more SD70MAC's from EMD. (Rumor has is that CSX would be an all GE road were it not for the fact that GM is a major automobile shipper.)

The trend is clearly to get more hp from fewer cylinders for fuel economy and lower pollution levels, hence the GE Evolution series 12 cyl. 4400 hp. units.

And yes, examples should be preserved, just like someone should have saved Amtrak P30CH's, and SDP40F's and would some museum please save a F40PH (St. Louis this is right up your alley).

90 made two trips in February, 1968 as helper on Newark (Penn Sta) to Wilkes-Barre (Ashley) High Iron Co. trips run by CNJ. Road engine was Steamtown 127 (CPR 1278) from Cranford. (CNJ F-M TM from Newark over PC/LV)

First trip it went Jim Thorpe to Ashley derailing on return trip. Understand tender derailed. It was repaired in time to make second trip a week later working from Allentown/Bethlehem to Ashley and return.
