Post subject: Why is UP 942 at Orange Empire Ry. Mus Unlettered? *PIC*
PostPosted: Mon Apr 19, 2004 8:57 pm

Hello all,

Does anybody know why UP 942 was never fully lettered? Is this due to the Union Pacific's interpretation of Copyright Law, or something else (e.g. more work planned, unit retains its C&NW commuter configuraion, lack of funds/labor). Or has the work been finished and they haven't updated their website?

Thanks,
Tom

The cosmetic work has not been done. When OERM obtained the engine a quick yellow coat of paint was applied to the engine to generally make it presentable.

It is a matter of having the resources of funds and labor to allocate. Eventual goals would be to fix various surface defects and undo the visual changes made by C&NW; and then paint and letter the locomotive.

The 942 is maintained in operating condition. But, it will not be used during this coming weekendÂ’s rail festival. U25B SP3100 and ALCO RSD-1 OERM 1956 (ex-DOT 012) are the scheduled locomotives with ALCO S-4 SP 1474 and OERM 1975 (ex-DOT 015 RSD-1) as the back-up units.

Thanks for the quick reply!

When all work is completed, will you eventually reinstall the steam generators? This would make it one of only a handful of E-units units that have them (and probably the first to have them reinstalled). Diesel restoraiton work does take time, but it good to see you have found a way to make the unit useable while it is restored.

Thanks,
Tom

You were in luck.

Not sure about the steam generators. I don't even know if we have any on hand. One more item to keep maintained!

[At least here in Southern California we seldom have need for steam heat.]

Our diesel crew has their hands full keeping six, or so, units operating and begining the restoration of our SP SW-1.

You are in good company in restoring a E-unit - on my short list I can count 10 units that are currently undergoing, or are planned to be restored within the next year. Given this fact, it is suprising that there isn't more collaboration to acquire or reproduce rare parts (such as side panels, Farr grilles, steam generators, etc.) and take advantage of the economies of scale and standarization of design that EMD intended. (hmm... perhaps a editorial topic)
