While surfing the messages I came across this tidbit under the Rio Golden thread

"The train at heritage square is still running but it is pulled by a gas powered critter. The owner is Ed Dickkens. He will be going to Canada to run the steam program for the C.N. he will be leaving on May 24."

CN steam program? What CN steam program?
It would really please me greatly to see streamlined 4-8-4 CN 6400 or Semi-Streamlined 4-6-4 5703 operated again, but I'm thinking maybe the poster made a typo and meant CP?

The CP already has someone running the steam program and from what I hear he is doing a very good job.

I'm not going to mention any names (not CN), but the Elgin County Railway Museum in St. Thomas, Ontario, owners of 5700, have already received an inquiry about the possibility of rebuilding it. Don't get to excited though because it was only a phone call asking what we thought. There has been no official offer and we don't expect one in the near future, if at all. It is just in the dreaming stage. It may never happen.

This coming weekend, May 1 & 2, would be a good opportunity to see 5700, as well as Reading 2100, because it is the Elgin County Railway Museum's 16th annual 'Railway Nostalgia Weekend'. For more details click on the link, then on "Hours & Events".

Where at the RRM of PA would the 2100 be able to run? I would like to see the engine somewhere it can be used for something more than a rusting static display engine.

Why put a perfectly good running steam locomotive, with only about 50 running hours on it since its last major rebuild, on static display in a museum? What a waist!

Hmmmm - fits on that turntable so well you'd think she had been built to do so!

Here's a little known story many of you are not aware of--about two or three years ago Tom Payne approached us with the intent of donating No. 2100 to the RR Museum of PA! His intention at the time was to take a tax deduction for the engine but because his company was Canadian he could not obviously comply with IRS tax laws in the U.S. to do so. He sent us a videotape of the engine running in Canada in snow with a caboose in tow at track speed--very interesting footage. He also said that the stoker, grates and other firebox appurtances removed for oil firing were safely crated up and that modifications made to the locomotive were fully reversible. We had toyed with the idea of having a "roving ambassador" to travel around the state of Pennsylvania, much like the Flagship Niagara does for the Erie Maritime Museum. But 'twas naught to be, I'm afraid.

I can report on good authority that an operating contract has been signed for the 2100 to pull tourist trains on a heavy duty branchline in the Pacific Northwest commencing this summer. Arrangements are currently being made to get her to the West Coast.

I'm sure you'll be seeing a lot more on this soon.

As regards614, we are actively persuing relocating the engine (hopefully this summer) to a location where she can be cleaned-up and opened for public display. As we are in active discussions with the 3 potential "new homes", I can't go further at this time. We'll post the decision as soon as it's made.
