Cochise considering Benson-to-Tombstone tourist train

The Cochise County Board of Supervisors is considering a proposal to create a historic-themed tourist train on a 28-mile rail line between Benson and Tombstone, Arizona.

"The train would be designed from the ground up to replicate a true Western-theme train, equipped with modern amenities and passenger comforts," according to the proposal submitted Tuesday.

The train would run both steam and diesel power. About 100,000 annual passengers are projected. Total cost of the project is an estimated $13 million to $17 million. - The Associated Press, The Tucson Citizen, courtesy Larry W. Grant

Weren't these rails ripped out some years ago by SP? If I recall, typical passenger service in steam days was an M-4 Mogul with a single Harriman combination car.

I seem to recall a "last train" photograph showing a 70 tonner and the combine.

> M.E. Allen the 9 miles from fairbank to tombstone were removed in 1960. the line from fairbank to benson is still in use by the san padro and southwestern rr co. last train picture appears in dave myricks book railroads of arizona vol 1.
