Plinthed for operation?

I am wondering how many railroads placed locomotives on display, secretly expecting that someday they'd be revived for operation? While many were just pushed from the deadline to the park, quite a large number were sealed and prepped before display. Anyone know of locomotives which went to public display, packed for longterm sleep and then awakening?

Along the same lines, which locomotives were the worst basketcases, but reawakened to see service once more (excluding the miracles at Barry)?

I'd guess the Rogers they pulled out of a river in.. New Zealand, was it?

It was said the "Santa Fe" always sealed up their locomotives cosmolined everything & so onin case thry were ever needed again for an emergency or whatever. Wooly

Not quit a locomotive, but I once heard an interesting story about a wreck derrick. This was a one-of-a-kind electric derrick used by the Pacific Electric.

When the order came down to retire the derrick and get it ready for movement, the local crew thought that it was going to Orange Empire (at that time Trolley Museum). So the employees tack welded the spreader bars, etc. to the deck of the derrick.

But -- the derrick was going to the scrapper. The local crew was surprised and embarrassed when they found out that the derrick did not go to the museum group.
