Mid-Continent's Volunteers will load #29 for movement to North Freedom tomorrow. Arrival in North Freedom and unloading is supposed to take place Thursday. Mid-Continent's webcam (linked below) is going to be repositioned to show the unloading process. Should be an interesting show.

Boyd:

Tbanks for the photos. Rough shape, but I've seen worse. A couple of questions, about tenders no less:

1. It appears that the 29 may have doors over the coal bunker. Is this in fact true?

2. If so, is she the only preserved steam locomotive with a tender so equipped?

3. Is that really a Northern Pacific tender behind the C&NW ten-wheeler and if so, off of what locomotive?

Thanks. I wish you guys well with the move.

Just returned from MI assisting in the prep work for the move. Answering your questions to the best of my tired ability is: yes it had doors over the coal bunker, but the doors are now gone. Yes that is really a NP tender, haven't a clue to what it came off of, maybe an S4? Have to ask Clint next time I see him, surprised I didn't, it is a nice tender. Can't answer the other question. Regards, John.

Les,

I can't add much that John didn't already answer.
The NP tender I believe came from the Minnesota Transportation Museum, purchased by Clint as a replacement for the totally deteriorated original C&NW tender which was scrapped. It's been quite a long time since it was acquired, but maybe someone at MTM knows what loco it came from.

 Post subject: CNW R-1 #'s
PostPosted: Wed May 26, 2004 11:48 am

I note on steamlocomotive.com that there are three CNW R-1 class 4-6-0's listed:

#444 - at Forney

#175 - in Michigan (with the NP tender)

#1385 - at Mid-Continent

Why the widely different #'s? Were these re-numbered by some other owner(s) along the way?

Thanks!

Scott

The C&NW numbered steam locomotives into vacant number slots on their roster, thus any class of loco could have any number 2, 3, or 4 digits long.
Any consecutive numbers of locos of the same class was pure coincidence based on empty number slots.

Mid-West Locomotive & Machine Works was contracted to disassemble and load the CRRR #29 for movement to North Freedom. Three volunteers from Mid Continent Railway Museum helped with removing and labeling parts and loading the trucks. The # 29's boiler was removed from the frame and the tender tank was removed from the underframe to clear the bridge between Houghton and Hancock.

The NP tender is off of a scraped Rotary Snow Plow that was cut up in the late 60's. Apparently the plow was built for the Copper River & Northwestern. It is also set up for doors over the coal bunker.
