Hello All...

Without getting into the "touchy" issues, I know a lot of people were interested in what was taking place in Scranton this weekend.

On Saturday and Sunday the 514 and 3 cars will depart Steamtown for a trip to Carbondale at 11 am with a 2 hour layover there...

Also, the 2317 will participate in various yard demonstrations and short train rides within the Steamtown yard area Saturday, Sunday and Monday.

Of course the brand-spankin-new trolley extension will be up and running with multiple departures each day.

A rare chance for a steam/diesel/electric weekend.

The Carbondale trip carried 48 passengers in three cars. At least a third of them were unaware that this trip was running without steam.

The newly extended Electric City trolley rides were going out with 35+ people on each of their 5 trips that day.

I'm not sure what the total #'s were for the trolley, but I know it was PACKED on may runs from the report I got.

The reported numbers for the diesel train were 70 Saturday and over a hundred Sunday, I'm sure the trolley had higher numbers for each day.

Two of us made it a point to count the passengers as they got off the train on Saturday and there were not 70. Perhaps 20+ got off at Carbondale and found some other way back?

OK, if you counted physically, can't dispute that... I was just going by the "official" numbers, which weren't that stellar to begin with. Next time you're in town let me know, we can share some stories over a Yuengling or two......

Carbondale...??? Is this Carbondale, Illinois???
Please be more specific. Speaking of that, anyone
know of any good tourist lines in Illinois other than IRM. Trolley lines acceptable.

What about that trolley that used to cross a river bridge, is that gone now?

Will do. By the way everyone who can make it should ride the extended Electric City trolley ride! Once you are south of the tunnel where the second track is in place, you have the feeling of what the Laurel Line must have been like. Perhaps they could "borrow" some cars from other trolley museums? That Lehigh Valley Transit car up in Maine would look sweet on this line.

I don't mean to throw water on the Steamtown operation, but everyone need to know what the reality is. I am hopeful that political pressure and people like the L&WV NRHS and ELDCPS can add some quality to the scene.

Carbondale Main Track - former D&H - 17.6 miles on the Delaware & Hudson main from “CARBON” (former D&H Minooka Jct.), to the end of track in the old Carbondale yard, including the Vine Street Branch, which provides a connection to the former Lackawanna trackage via the Diamond Branch.

That's Carbondale PA, on the old D&H North of Scranton.

By that "trolley that used to cross a bridge" do you mean Keokuk Junction?

We cross the Roaring Brook 5 days a week just North of the Tunnel.

Well, let's see:
1) IRM
2) Fox River Trolley Museum, S. Elgin. Electric cars operate on a short segment of the Fox River Electric line.
3) Monticello Railroad Museum, Monticello (central Illinois). Was Monticello and Sangmon Valley. Diesel-powered trains on a few miles of an old IC branch, lots of equipment on display.
4) Freeport and Southern - a Heisler operates over a mile or two of track at Freeport (NW).
5) Galt. Steam locomotives for sale. Make an offer!

I think that's about it.

The dam at Keokuk had a cab-on-flat which operated about half way out on the dam; this operation ended a couple of years ago, and the locomotive is now at Mt. Pleasant, Iowa.

Of course, the Crab Orchard and Egyptian is long gone. :(

Isn't Crab Orchard's #17 still at Boone Iowa?

We road the train Saturday and were told that there were 70 people on board. The car we sat in had four if us a ranger and a vlounteer. It was diesel but a train ride any way you look at it.
The trolley ride was a nice ride also about 12 people road with us.

I checked and only open weekends, and I don't have
a weekend open when I will be over that way

Yes, the dam over the river was the place I was thinking about. Sorry I missed that one.

Aha, I did get this one in 1984, with #17 from fire-up to late afternoon. Mostly switching but she did pull some cars both direction, including by a wig-wag which was pretty cool. Never did anything with the video of that...maybe someday, if anyone else even remembers it.

After this she went to Fremont For awhile, and may have gone to Boone, I am not sure...Steamlocomotive.com would provide the answer.
