I was told that this engine had the last of the work required by the new laws finished last week. It has been out on the line breaking in to test the engine out. I think that the engine is supposed to run this weekend out of New Haven, KY. The web site hasn't been kept up with in a while. If anyone is interested, contact the Kentucky Railway Museum. I know that they are excited to have it run and want to show it off. Happy Memorial Day!

I don't know how many still have that kind of non swinging truck, but most of the Santa Fe prairies preserved here and there have them.

No it isn't.

Everett RR (ex-Huntington & Broad Top Mt.) 2-6-2 11 was removed from Williams Grove a few years ago and taken back to the Everett, Pa. depot for display.

At the Museum of Transportation in St. Louis we have Chicago & Northwestern Class D 4-4-2 #1015 with its early non-swiveling trailing truck, along with a Canadian National 4-6-2, with one that swivels a bit, much like that of the L&N loco.

Here is some more info on these two locos not handy when making the earlier post. CNW 4-4-2 #1015 built by Schenectady Loco Works (later part of ALCO) in 1900. CN 4-6-2 #5529 built by Locomotive & Machine Co. of Montreal in 1905 as Intercolonial Ry #346. Our founders sought out typical examples of each wheel arrangement in part to be able to preserve such design elements. A visit to MOT gives you the chance to look at the evolution of steam loco design from the 1860s to the end, all at one place and time. You can see the sole surviving American inside connected loco (1868 4-4-0 "Daniel Nason - cylinders under smokebox driving cranked front axle), 1870 4-4-0 and 4-6-0 locos with blind (unflanged) drivers, a Baldwin double steam dome boiler on a 4-4-0, the first loco built with a cast engine bed (frame) including integral cylinders (Terminal RR of St. Louis 0-8-0 #318, 1925), a three cylinder 0-8-0 (Alton & Southern #12), up to the sole surviving Norfolk & Western 2-8-8-2, oldest surviving Hudson (Nickel Plate #170 - 1927), only surviving steam inspection loco (Reading "Black Diamond" 2-2-2T), and the only elevated railway steam loco in any museum anywhere in the world, Lake Street Elevated #9, Forney 0-4-4T (Rhode Island 1893). You can't see these things all together to make comparisons anywhere else.

Oops! I forget Y-3a class #2050 at the Illinois
Railway Museum. I should have said only Y-6 2-8-8-2.

last i saw, the 2716 was sitting out behind the shed at KRM with no plans at all for her. i don't know what was goin on with here either. i know they were running it as of 1996 on the TP&W. i think it would need the overhaul to get it in shape per the new regs. the only problem is, no where to run it. the museum doesn't think that their trackage is ample enough to run it with out tearin the track up to quick. 152 makes a great branchline engine. it would be nice to send it to some place who would work on it and run it. i thought that if they could work out some long term lease with another group who intended on rebuilding it, that would be nice. i for one would like to see it sent somewhere for free to work on it seeing how it is sitting not doing anything.

For a short time, one could see C&O 614 and 2716, both in operation, side by side. Want a steam preservation moment that must have been! Two heavy locos; one passenger, one freight. Trains had a painting of the scene in one of it's back issues.
Understandably, the KRM needs to conserve it's financial resources, but wouldn't that be a kick to see CSX get behind something as glorious as that? Might even make Union Pacific blush. Might shame NS into steam ops again.
I can dream, can't I?

Richard:

Just for the record, the C&O 4-8-4's, built for passenger service, were used in freight service on occassion. And the C&O found that the 2-8-4 Kanawha's which were built for freight service, were more economical with their roller bearings to run on passenger trains than the old C&O 4-8-2's. This lastest only, of course, until the railroad started receiving the EMD E-units and then the Kanawha's went back into freight service.

Thanks for the info. A few months ago I stumbled on to the Hoosier Valley Railroad Museum's website and was surprised to see that they had a C&O 2-8-4 and that it was being restored, whats the progress of that? ether 2716 or 2789 would be nice to see run in there C&O apperence. Would look outstanding on the New River Train.
