This website (hopefully) linked below is an excellent example of a very active and seemingly effective Special Interest Group (SIG). PATH is working to build rail-trails and other linear parks in the ATL metro area. One of the organization's leaders is high-up in ATL politics and an announced Congressional candidate.

Thoughts to ponder.

(1.) Does the railroad preservationist movement have anything to match?

(2.) Think what the far-flung railroad preservationist movement could do if it got itself organized...really and truly organized. That would include:
(a.) finding, and agreeing upon, leadership;
(b.) deciding on a set of policy initiatives;
(c.) rounding up funding;
(d.) appointing effective spokespersons; and
(e.) installing the discipline to stick with the program.

(3.) Do those of us dedicated to railroad preservation have it within us to put aside all of the quibbling and get a really effective program together?

While you are relaxing this weekend, remember who made it possible, and what group of people kept us from speaking German or Japanese.
