This came up a few months ago. All I knew back then is all I know now. The engine would need to be recertified under Part 230, including ultrasound inspection and new Form 4 calculated. Here's what I added a few months back:

"My impression gathered from reading their Web site and surfing around is that no work is going into the locomotive any significant way. Liability issues and UP policies have closed off any easy avenues for operations and that has made it difficult to put together the finances and energy to undertake a recertification.

But don't rely on rumors from me, I'd suggest you contact the Arkansas Railroad Museum and ask. Let us know what you learn. E-mail:

Tim Stuy added in response to this post that many of their excursion fleet cars have been sold of moved elsewhere by their owners.

Ted,

GGRM has a successful engineer-for-an-hour program utilizing trackage within the Hunters Point shipyard. Additionally, a "smaller" functional steam locomotive provides training opportunities for operating crews and, most importantly, dynamic interpretive possibilities for museum patrons.

While not capable of operating at 79 mph over Caltrain's mainline like their SP#2472, State Belt Rwy 0-6-0 #4, nonetheless, would be appropriate at walking speed over GGRM's existing trackage. The other 0-6-0, SP #1227, is a long term project. Another disassembled steam locomotive at Hunters Point is SP 2-8-0 #2706, which is privately owned by a GGRM member.

that, and the Yew Pee removed the switch inot their facility, thus making it impossible to get to the outside world without new track construction taking place.

Buddy Bob:

I think he is counting these engines out because the restoration projects are under way. I think he wants "new" steam engines. My bid is for one of the Great Northern Steam engines. Power plus color makes for a great combination, if you ask me.

I know where all talking about the cash to do this and where to run it and so on, but back to the question what would be nice to see restored or run again. My vote goes for a member of the Greatest class of Pacific ever built, the Canadian Pacific G5 #1201. Its been almost 14 years scince her last excursion, I think its time to hit the road once again.
