Found a bunch of "vintage" (and more current) steam tourist line photos taken by a Mr. Saul Nadler and offered up on his webpage(s) on railfan.net Many of these photos are from the 1960's and 1970's and are of the railway preservation era that many here (Kurt, Rob, et al) hold dear.

I will post links to a few of these shots, starting off with a pre-1972 shot of Black River & Western's ex-Great Western Ry 2-8-0 60 at the long-gone Ringoes water tower. Remember that? It was an ex-farm water tower that leaked so bad in later years they put a swimming pool liner in it to hold water! I said pre-1972 because that's when 60 lost her silver smokebox paint.

BRW 60 @ Ringoes tank

Speaking of water towers, here a shot of Wilmington & Western's ex-Mississippi Central 4-4-0 98 at the Greenbank, DE water tower. This was either (most likely) a "staged" photo before 98 was restored to service or a RARE shot of her in late 1972 when she was rushed into service (sans new paint and lettering) to replace the ailing CN 2-6-0 92. Either way it was before she was turned to face north / west. Like the headlight... what happened to that?

W&W 98

This one is for Jeff Slupski! New Hope & Ivyland's ex-Canadain National 4-6-0 1553 at rest (I believe in New Hope yard). Note the nose of a Reading FP7, IIRC the NH&I's original operator (Steam Trains, Inc) leased these RDG diesels for freight service. This was before ex-Washington Terminal Alco RS-1 57 showed up.

I'm not sure if that was a staged shot or not, maybe the W&W folks can elaborate. I do have a postcard of the 98 on display in Strasburg and while it appears much the same, the number plate looks different and there is no lettering. Same with another card of the 98 with no lettering posed with two passenger coaches somewhere, but doesn't look like on the W&W that I've seen. Looks like some work was done on the engine by the time that shot was taken...

Wanamaker Kempton & Southern's ex-Bonhomie & Hattiesburg Southern 2-6-2 250 at Kempton, PA during the late 60's. Now displayed at Edaville with a different (larger) tender (IIRC, off a MEC steam pile driver rig).

WK&S 250

Again with BR&W 2-8-0 60. This time at the old Flemington station / runaround. Definitely during the first few years, note the wooden coaches. Behind 60 is (I believe) ex-Bangor & Aroostook center-door combine, ex-DL&W wooden day coach, ex-Belfast & Moosehead Lake baggage-mail car, and just make out the open gondola, which I think was ex-PRR. The BR&W was leasing the tracks (Ringoes-Flemington) from the PRR at the time and was responsible for ROW maintenance. Those weeds were getting a little high boys!!

Philly's not the greatest city to live in, but there sure is a lot of great steam within an easy driving distance.

Not full size, but I believe it was listed in the STEAM PASSENGER SERVICE DIRECTORY for a year or two... up in Roseland, NJ was Henry Becker's Centerville & Southwestern RR. An elaborate and complete miniture railway system on his farm. Crown jewel was this live-steam 4-8-4 based on a DL&W Pocono. This is the equipment (unfortunately minus the 4-8-4) that operates from time to time at Phillipsburg Railroad Historian's museum in Phillipsburg, NJ

Once again the subject is the BR&W at Ringoes, NJ. This time the engine is ex-Lackawanna 2-6-0 565. The caption says Flemington, but it's really at Ringoes, across from the station (I have a shot taken from other side). 565 never operated at Ringoes and was sold in 1968 to John Maris of the Morris County Central steam tourist RR, then at Whippany, NJ. It was resold to Tony Citro and displayed at his restaurant in Wayne, NJ until 1975. Next 565 went to New Hope, PA for an overhaul by a contractor with plans to go to the Morris County Central, which had relocated to Newfoundland, NJ. That overhaul was aborted, the MCC closed, and eventually 565 went to Steamtown, where it resides today (to anwser Mr. Nadler's question!)

565 looks pretty sad today, but at least she's indoors. Hopefully she will be restored (for display) in the not too distant future and have a place of honor in the roundhouse .

Dave,

That wasn't on the BR&W on the PRR Flemington branch. 565 did make at least one test run at the tourist line's original planned home at Chester, NJ. Starting in 1960, BR&W founder Bill Whitehead tried to set up on the now-long-gone CNJ branch at Chester, but for assorted reasons (including NIMBYs--hey they're nothing new!) he couldn't and the operation moved to Flemington for storage and later (1965) for operation.

The pix of 565 on the bridge, taking water via a pump and hose, was on the CNJ bridge over the North Branch of the Raritan River.

BTW: there's no "Black River" anywhere near Ringoes or Flemington... the name comes from the Black River near Chester, NJ. The name must have sounded too good to change when they moved!
