Illinois Railway Museum's big Santa Fe 4-8-4, out of the weather after years rusting away in Chicago. Moved the whole way to IRM on its own wheels. Good to know that someone still remembers what those big round things are on the side of a locomotive.

These, in many eyes, are one of the Cadillacs of the steam era. I hope we'll see one alive again one day. I understand that the Pueblo, CO group has backed down on their operational plan.
Hopefully as times move forward, we'll see one of these big bad boys polishing the rails at 80 mph+. Until then, we can polish the brass, get rid of the asbestos, and keep the bearings oiled. Let's keep them up! Who knows what the future might bring us?

2913 appears to still be in pretty good shape at Fort Madison. It hasn't hurt one little bit that the Dupont plant there 'donated' a professionally-applied coat of black Imron on it. Can't speak mechanically, but cosmetically, it's in amazingly good condition.

They have a live webcam there focused right on 2913, and if you want to see it for yourself, check this link, but you'll probably need something better than dial-up to view it real-time.

I saw it a few years back, and I agree that the 2913 appears in great shape. From what I've heard, though, the river has flooded from time to time enough to get river water into the driver and tender bearings. It might be a real mess under there. If everything else was good, I guess you could get parts from one of the others across the country. IRM is not too far from Fort Madison - ;^).
