 Post subject: Locomotive Firing Classes
PostPosted: Thu Aug 05, 2004 12:23 am

The Nevada Northern is planning to run steam 7 days a week during July and August of next year. For this to be successful we will need fireman. (Locomotives 40 & 93 are hand fired coal burners.) In planning for this we are looking at training fireman. Realizing this need we are thinking of offering two classes next spring one for experienced fireman to learn how to instruct the next wave. THe second course would be an intense course on firing for people who either have no experience or want to upgrade their skills.

We are thinking of 5 days for each session and a combination of classroom and hands on. Course would include written material, a video? and lots of hands on. Class size would be limited to 10-12 people in each class. We would use both of our locomotives to show differences. We would use the mainline which has grades up to 3%.

The plan is to coordinate this with Great Basin College and successful participants would receive a certificate from the college.

What I need from this group is a couple of things.
1) What do you think of the overall concept? Is there such a need in our industry?
2) What would be a reasonable price?
3) Would you want lodging included?
4) How important is the certificate from the college?
5) Who would you like to see instruct this?

Thanks,

Mark

I think this would be a good incentive to get some repair work done around your historic site, if it could be coordinated properly. So many hours of scraping rust, weed cutting, window or track repair in exchange for the chance to learn to be a locomotive fireman. Those who did not have time or inclination to do other work could, of course, just pay for the course.

Interesting and awaiting seeing how it works out.

Yes.

> 2) What would be a reasonable price?

Not sure of the market - comparable programs?

> 3) Would you want lodging included?

Aren't you guys pretty much out in nowhere? Definitely a plus for anybody not from your area.

Not to me, probably very much so for younger college attending people whi could use it as elective credits.

Handsome Jack.

I would be interested and would be happy with work in exchange for knowledge. Also would be happy with sleeping in a caboose, it's cheaper than a hotel as long as there is a shower nearby.
Unfortunately, I don't live particularly close to be firing everyday for a season. Anyways, I say go for it.
