Does anybody know of a list of retirement dates, scrapping dates of the Canadian Pacific G-5's that is listed on-line? Also were these engines "dismantled" by the railroad or sent to one or more primary location(s)to be scrapped?

I don't know about an on-line list(remember not everything everywhere gets put on the internet) of G5 scrap dates, but there is a CPR book out there that has this info.

When working on our 16mm footage we purchase of steam in Canada in the late 50's I borrowed such a book which listed the build dates, scrap dates, and so forth for each engine. Sorry I don't remember the name of it, but it had a chart in the back with all this info. We used some of that for scrap dates, and did a list of the engines we showed in the video and built-scrap dates. Our list of course is incomplete since we don't show every G5 on film.

Anyone have old in-service photos of any of the extant CP G5s? I think the 1201 builders photo is about the only one I've seen. Plenty of them in preservation, but seemingly few photos in revenue service.

In the videos I mentioned we have 1214, 1234, 1244,1283,and 1299, off the top of my head. What I really like are the G3's. Boy they really used them on freight there at the end. Love those melodic nuematic whistles too on the CPR.

Am trying to get a CD of some of the better cuts of audio from the collection I bought, but it got hung up in post production outfit.

Seeing a Royal Hudson 2854 on freight was neat as well as 2860 in service, and CN 6060. I guess thats what you mean Bob...in service of some of the more famous ones.

I recently ran across a shot of UP844 in service on a Freight, then on Passenger in the 1950's. Pretty cool film find! Hey preserving vintage films and still photos should count as railway preservation as well, don't you think!!! After all not everyone can buy a private car, or run a loco on the weekends.

I've noticed that Ohio Central's G5 #1293 has a retangular box just in front of the smokestack. From pics I've seen, other G-5's are not so equipped. What exactly is this piece (feedwater heater was my guess when asked), and why are only some 1200's equipped with them? Thanks!

Yes, it's a feedwater heater. 1278 used to have one, as did 1286. I have never seen a picture of the 1201,1238, or 1246, with one.
I've seen all the extant 1200's.

Any reason why '78 and '86 had them removed? Sorry for all the questions, just satisfying some curiousity?

1200-1201 (G5a) were built with the Worthington S-type FWH.

1202-1271 (G5b and c subclasses) were built with Elesco exhaust steam injectors, located on the fireman's side.

The final G5 locos, (1272-1301, subclass G5d), were built with Elesco coil-type FWHs-- a post-war design (the ex-NYC 4-6-4 on the TH&B had one added). They used the common hot water pump mounted on the left side of the engine.

Nelson Blount didn't like the look of the coil Elesco on 1278, and had a "traditional" bundle-type Elesco installed to replace the "bathtub" coil heater.

1286 had the FWH in place when George Hart owned it; Red Clay removed it, as well as the exhaust injector on 1238.

Green Mountain removed the exhaust injector on 1246 when she was rebuilt for service in 1968-69.

1293 still carries the Elesco coil FWH.

And so does 1278-- it still had the FNB bundle when it left Gettysburg for Morgan Run.

1293 has an Elesco coil-type feedwater heater that makes that ugly lump in front of the stack. 1278 had an Elesco (different) type heater that looked like a cross-wise cylinder in front of the stack. I have photos of 1238 and 1286 that I took in 1993, and they have no external evidence of heater. Thinking back to the NY Central and all of the different heater configurations that Hudsons have, I honestly can't tell you from looking whether the G-5's have some kind of inside the smokebox feedwater heater, like a Coffin, or two injectors. I don't see any feedwater pump on the fireman's side of the 1238/1286, so would guess injectors.

Nope no feed water heaters on the '38 or '86, I think it was pretty well covered in the above post. However on an intersting foot note, A Staunton watch maker bought a bag of junk at an auction some time in the mid 90's. Knowing very little about railroads he showed the contents to Jack Showalter, interstingly enough it was a patent (complete with drawings and Purde test plant results) for a feedwater heater that would be practicly invisable inside of the smoke box. Formaly owned by a local inventer, who's attempt to break in to the steam locomotive applince industry came to late to be effective. Jack planed to build and install one in all 3 of his locomotives if he ever got running again. Now all we're waiting on is the "IF".....
