Is there any railroad or museum that uses a working coal tipple?

The one in Chama is more-or-less functional, but they don't use it in daily service. The last I heard is that work is needed before it can hold a great amount of coal. Perhaps one of the Friends members can provide an update on the current situation.

The East Broad Top has an operating one. They have not used it much lately as it is difficult to get a truck back to the tiple to load it with coal.

Mark,

I don't know if this one counts, but in Lexington Ky on the old C&O, there is one that I believe is used by a concrete plant.

IN OHIO-

There is also a large concrete one just outside Marion, Ohio on the old PRR. It is visible on the west side of US 23. A much viewed site by yours truly in his college days, as it was "past the half-way" point for my trip to Denison.

At Nelsonville, Ohio, there is one from the Hocking Valley days, most likely the only one left from that railroad. Its now owned by Hocking Valley Scenic, I believe.

IN MICHIGAN:

Baldwin, Michigan, on the Pere Marquette
Lake, Michigan, on the Pere Marquette
Ludington, Michigan on the Pere Marquette
New Buffalo, Michigan, on the Pere Marquette
Niles, Michigan, on the Michigan Central/ NYC
Pontiac, Michigan, On the Grand Trunk Western
Saginaw, Michigan, on the Pere Marquette

Hope this helps!

Les,

I am sure it is a total concrete tower. I have no photos but I am certain that someone at the Bluegrass Railroad Musuem may be able to help you get one. Check out www.bgrm.org

Can't be prefect I guess ;-) I'm pretty sure I missed a couple more in Ohio, too.

The Chicago Northwestern's concrete coaling tipple was still on the southeast side of Ashland Wisconsin when last I was up there about 3 years ago. It was not active.

Also the GTW coaling tower in Grand Haven Mi. It was stripped of all steel in 1950, acording to my "GTW Evening Before The Diesel" by Charles R. Foss. The 1223 is proudly displayed next to the coaling tower, with a box car, P.M. and GTW cabeese.
