Hi,

I have been contacted by the City of Gainesville's (Georgia) Superintendant of Public Lands and Buildings requesting information on their GM #209 that is on display.

He is asking for the detailed history on the locomotive and for any stencils or decals for the lettering on the locomotive.

I have an extensive web site on the GM, but I have no photos of any of the locos with the original lettering style (good enough to make stencils from). I have heard that the lettering on the locomotives were in a yellow/gold and not white. Can anyone confirm this?

I also do not have much in the way of history on this particular locomotive.

If anyone can help me out providing these items to the City of Gainesville, I would appreciate it.

They are planning to repaint all the equipment they have in their small RR museum. This includes the SAL caboose and the SRR baggage car.

Thanks for your help.

Doug

The 4th Quarter 2003 (Vol. 20, #4) issue of "Lines South", published by the ACL/SAL Historical Society, has a nice feature on the Gainesville Midland by Robert Hanson that includes both B&W and color photos. You are correct, the lettering and trim is yellow.

The new "Trackside Around Atlanta" (Morning Sun Books) features color photos by Howard Robbins including six pages of Gainesville Midland, steam and diesel.

Are you sure it has the correct builder plate? 1930 sounds awful recent for that locomotive. Isn't it a Russian Decapod?

It ain't a Russian. It's a Baldwin medium duty similar to Strasburg #90. Seaboard had both types of decapods. Gary

FYI,
GM had 9 decopods 201-209

201 Russian sold 1952
202 Russian sold 1952
203 ex-AT&N 402 preserved by Atlanta Chapter NRHS
204 Russian scrapped 1957
205 Russian scrapped 1957
206 Russian Finally ended up at Southern Railroad Spencer Shops in Salsbury, NC as SAL 544
207 ex-Georgia Florida & Alabama 401, scrapped 1959
208 ex-SAL 530, displayed at Winder, Georgia.
209 ex-SAL 533, displayed at Gainesville, Georgia.

Only GM Russian preserved is at NC RR museum.

207 was only GM locomotive scrapped when SAL purchased the GM.
