Its been at least 50 years since one was able to photograph a Soo Line (2-8-2) pulling 10-12 freight cars and Soo Line (wood cupola) caboose, while traversing the branch lines of southeastern Wisconsin. This is a true photographer’s special, coordinated by Goodheart Productions (of 3751 Grand Canyon fame), the Chicago Chapter NRHS, the Wisconsin Automotive Museum, and 1003 Operations. With enough support, the train is scheduled to run November 5-7, 2004.

The freight moves will be handled so photographers may “catch up,â€

Do you know what freight cars will be used? Most photo freights outside of tourist railroads and museums have used modern freight cars which spoils the entire effect. If a vintage freight consist would be used, which would not be hard to assemble in this region, it would be much easier to meet the sign-up number.

It is my understanding that the railroad will do its best to provide a variety of older, freight cars. In this modern era, this is the best that we photographers can hope for. It is likely that many of the multiple, photo runs will be staged on private property for the benefit of the photographers who will cover the full operating costs of this unique event.

Redberan is correct; the railroad will be providing the freight cars. They are aware of the phototgraphic intent of the trip and have mentioned older covered hoppers, flatcars, etc, although nothing is guaranteed.

It should be similar to a 2003 photo special with over 20 runbys in multiple locations during a single day that included several re-creations of old-time railroading.

You can probably expect multiple runbys in the same location with opportunities for viewing from various angles. Just think about this: Multiple runbys; no kids; controlled photo lines; steam on freight; well-experienced organizer and steam operator. Please remember, the group is limited to a maximum of 60 and is priced to cover operating costs only. No profit will be made by anyone and that includes the organizer and the locomotive operator.

It should be noted that the $340 price tag covers three full days of organized photo runs.
