A couple of weeks ago I posted asking about Climax drawings and I thought I'd update as to what I've found. Neither CSRM or the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania have any drawings. The Corry Area Historical Society did not recieve Walter Casler's collections and have only a few pictures. Some of the boiler drawings are in the hands of private collectors. A few gear and bearing drawings have surfaced and we have copies.

I have a number of letters out to current owners of Climaxes (short list). If any one has any other ideas please let me know.

Tom and others;

You bring up an interesting point, which I don't know the answer to. I would appreciate any thoughts on the matter.

One of the "wonders" of building 1:16th, and in Metric, is that I get to design as I go. Quite often, it is a ruler held up to a print. A lot of the designs have errors in them, and are not that detailed, anyway.

Does this work in full size? Are there legal implications of following older plans, or of making new parts on the shop floor?

I noted when I was in Rotterdam a couple of weeks ago, that new parts for valve guides (at least, that is what I identified them as!) were being made to CAD drawings.

I seem to remember that when 1201 was converted to oil, using CPR's untried drawings, that the ashpan airflow was on the edge of being too small, even with "full" airflow according to the drawings.

From the small work that I have done in full scale restoration, things have changed so much from the drawings as to make a lot of the drawings useless. Are your experiences the same?

John
I have lived in both worlds, where detailed drawings exist (Shay) and where they don't (Heisler). Believe me when I tell you that it makes life much easier when you have the drawings. Even when the part has been changed over the years, it is helpful to see the thought processes that went into the changes and many of these are found scribbled on the drawings themselves.
