Boston & Maine No.494 and caboose protected from the elements under a fine looking shelter. There appears to be some work left to be done but things are coming along nicely. Great job to all involved!

Stephen: A magnificent job of restoration and a great shelter. Will they build some type of fence or separation to keep people off the locomotive? A shame to lose the invested money and effort to such a small point.

Hi Richard, I don't believe there will be a fence, but I don't think one is needed. Her location is just a few feet from a municipal building or county courthouse.

When asked if 494 is to be protected from the ravages of the public, I would reply that the engine, tender and caboose have been on public display unprotected even from the weather since 1957. In that period, I am not aware of any serious vandalism or even any climbing accident. The people of the area cherish their locomotive and have been very good to her over the years. It would be too bad to change that now.

Thanks for posting the poctires. That is one of the nicest shelters that I have seen for an historic locomotive.

Now if the folks over in Waterfille, Maine could just do nearly as well with the Maine Central 470. She is another engine that needs to be protected from the Northern winters.
