I have been covered over updating my "Surviving World Steam Project" for this November, and did not get to read his article until now. But I wanted to publically congratulate Mike Peltier (who is a contributor this board as WP&YMike) for a job well done on this article.

Mike's article also points out how easy it is for us modern day writers/documenters to cross up history as we get further and further away from the actual events. It reminds me once again how carefull we have to be in recording what we know, and to make sure we got it right.

I am glad my "Surviving World Steam Locomotive" CD-ROM was helpful for his article; it was for just such research that it was intended.

Surviving World Steam Project

A very good article which deflates a few myths without being triumphalist. One bit I find unlikely, though not necessarily wrong, is the suggestion that there is a surviving MacArthur in Portugal. As far as I'm aware none ran there, the narrow gauge being strictly tank engine territory, so how did one get there? There were at least two types of 2-8-2T but one class was sold to the La Robla Railway in Spain.

One of the two classes of 2-4-6-0T (no that is not a mistake) did run as tender engines with the tanks removed but were reconverted to "normal" configuration later - I can't quote dates as my references are at home and I'm at work.
