Does anyone know what happend to the 4-6-0 that Richard Jenson rescued from a Kentucky coal mine near Madisonville, Ky and sent to Chicago on a flat car? I know it sold, but where did it go?

Thanks,

Stuart

For "before and after" photos of the 102, go to www.steamlocomotive.com and look at the Minnesota section. 102 resides in Currie, MN.

When this engine was sold to Minnesota, there was speculation that some of its many missing parts might have been in a boxcar, that went with Jensen's other 4-6-0 to a private owner in Rockford, Illinois. Were any of these parts ever found?

What was the other 4-6-0? The reason I ask is that I bought 3 photos off of ebay that show Cadiz RR steam and 2 are from 1954. They show a ten-wheeler and an 0-6-0. Interurban films has a video that shows the 0-6-0 running and it's called "Steam Up in the Bluegrass." It also shows the Brimstone, Meadow River, BC&G, M&NF, F&N and some Ky division IC steam. The 0-6-0 (ex ET & WNC RR) went to Crab Tree Coal and was cut up in the 80's I think, I'm thinking the 4-6-0 went with it when they went to diesel, but I don't know and I was wondering if it was the same engine that was saved from the mine, but it looks nothing like the GN 102. Anyway, if enough people show interest, I'll post the picture.

Thanks!

Stuart:

I heard years ago that Jenson had an ex-Hampton & Branchville RR (South Carolina) 4-6-0. Charleston Chapter, NRHS owned #44, the other H&B 4-6-0 and we had a set of BRAND NEW Elesco superheater units which wouldn't fit our engine. Word around the chapter was that these superheaters were for the other 4-6-0, which was owned by Richard Jensen. #44 and the parts are now at the South Carolina RR Museum in Winsboro. Someone up there may know more about the story. The book "Logging RR's of SC" by Tom Fetters has photos of all the H&B's engines.

Hi,

Dad called the former owner of the Cadiz RR this morning. He informed us that the 4-6-0 they had was sold to a RR in Arkansas. He said it was originally a MoPac ten-wheeler (Iron Mountain). Since there are only 2 MP ten-wheelers that I know of, I'm going to say the engine was scrapped.

Thanks for your help,

Stuart

One of our (now late) steam team members at IRM used to see this ex-Georgia Northern loco on an ex-RI flat at a steel mill on the south side of Chicago. One day, he drove past and saw two guys with torches climbing up on the loco. He stopped, learned that they had orders to cut it up, and physically stopped them from doing so (the late Bill Delaney was a sweet guy, but when he was ticked off, no one messed with him!). Within the next few days, IRM bought the loco (for the price of an outrageous storage bill from the mill owner--Dick Jensen's sister donated title), and eventually moved it to IRM for safekeeping. We didn't particularly want it, but we just couldn't stand the idea of cutting up a loco in this day and age. We later sold it to the End-Of-Track museum, for about what we paid for it.

The missing parts from the GN #102 were in the cars seized by C&WI in the early 1970s. The other 4-6-0 which was owned by Jensen is now at the Museum at Monticello Illnois.

Were these parts scrapped, or did any survive? If so, where?

According to the court testimony those parts along with tools and steam shop machinery, extra tenders, water cars, the CB&Q 5632 and its parts,
additional parts aquired from CB&Q and other sources as spares for 5629 and other projects were scrapped and destroyed by Erman Howell between 1972 and 1978. Hovever, since the $707,000.00 award to Jensen in 1978 and the subsequent appeal filed by the Railroads involved and subsequent to the settlement after his death in 1991 parts have been appearing numerous locations.

Were any of these supposed "parts" that have been appearing from 5629? I always thought that someone must have grabbed the number boards, etc. from her. That picture in TRAINS after the news broke still sends chills down my spine. Talk about flashbacks!

For personal reasons, I will not give a detailed answer to your question. But, some parts tools and equipment ie, spare drivers, feedwater heaters, etc., which in more than one of the Jensen related court cases, were testified to, as having been destroyed, have been located. In most of these cases the current possessor is unaware of the items route to his possession. We are not referring to souvenir items such as Number Boards. However I have the last used number boards for the 5629 and the spares.

Are you sure it was scrapped? There is a 4-6-0 lettered as MP 2522 on display in Paris, Arkansas.

(I tried to photographed in a driving rain several years ago, only to find there was no film in the camera. )

Hi,

The picture of MP 2522 that is in J. DAvid Conrads locomotive directory is not the same as the picture of Cadiz 12. The only other MP 4-6-0 that I know of is at MOT in ST. Louis. It was given to them long before the photo I have was taken. Therefore, I can only come to the conclusion that the engine was scrapped. Here is a photo of the Cadiz RR 12. It was taken in 1954.
