PostPosted: Fri Mar 23, 2001 11:01 pm

There's obviously alot of current interest in the big steam power from the "glory years" of America's railroads. Just look at all the beautiful O-scale models being produced these days. I think they're just trying to keep us broke ! Articulateds from LIONEL . . . whoda thunkit !

We have alot of great videos on N. & W. A's and Y's, and U.P. BigBoys, and so on. Almost enough to have their own cable channel ( hey Ted, why not? we have a GOLF channel ) BUT . . . where are the C & O movies ?

The question came to mind while looking through my copy of the book: C&O POWER. All these beautiful stills, but almost nothing is out on video. I mean come on, the C&O ran steam late enough that somebody had to point a movie camera at them once in a while. We have tapes on every Boondocks And Western, but nothing on vintage C&O.

Where's the film on the Allegheny's, Greenbrier's, Kanawha's, etc.??? I'm talking about the vintage regular in-service stuff, not the post-steam-era fan-trips. Now don't get me wrong, I like that stuff too. ( by the way, I'm the guy who painted CHESAPEAKE & OHIO back on the 614 in 1996, and you're welcome)

But where's the "Hooters on Blue Ridge" / "Last of the Giants" -C&O version ??
Somewhere there must be something.

WHO'S SITTING ON THE C & O MOVIES ????????

Steve:

Somewhere in the distant past, I seem to recall seeing some type of a C&O steam video. Not very professional if I remember and many not so great images. The reason I remember it is that it has a VERY bad (and VERY short) shot of our Kanawha (#2789). Bad and short, but it IS the 2789! The problem is that I don't remember who has the video (perhaps someone at our museum.) I won't be down there tomorrow but I'll see what I can find out from members via the internet. I'll let you know.

BTW, you wouldn't like to come down and letter OUR tender would you (and the sand dome for that matter!) We will eventually need someone to do it (the tender currently has that "diesel era" lettering that C&O gave many of their donated locomotives.) Do you have some type of a stencil or what?

When I hit the lottery, I would love to go around and do projects just like that. I live near Reading, PA and just happened to be close-by when 614 was being worked on at New Hope. The lettering job was done as a favor (for which they still owe me a cab-ride!).

From research and a trip to the B & O Museum to inspect the C & O engines there, I made my own pounce-patterns (the kind with all the little holes. I spent 17 years as a sign painter before going railroading for a living). The one with the words is huge at about 3 x 25 ft, but it could probably be copied. Richard Carter (at New Hope, formerly at Cass) helped line-up the pattern at the correct spot on that tender, with the help of a magnifying glass and a sharp builder's photo.

I only made the numbers I needed, not 0 thru 9. There are several "fonts" on lettering computers that come close to what some RR's used, but I have not found a single one that has the right style numbers. WESTERN MARYLAND 734 at Cumberland looks good, the further back you stand from her. The thin strokes are way too thick, for one thing. I guess I'm in the wrong business.

Strange, about that plain lettering on those donated Kanawhas . . . I had the same thoughts about the one in Lynchburg seen on here recently.

I also put the correct READING on 2102 in the early 1980's, and had a hand in doing the same on 2100 at Hagerstown in the late 80's. Around 1982 I lettered Reading Locomotive Shop Switcher 1251 at Strasburg. If you look closely, you can still see my pencil lines today. (a few of us were helping George Hart down there before the "Friends Of The RR. Museum of PA" was even thought about) Also Nickel Plate 757. There's a few more engines (and tenders) that I've worked on. Some time I want to do a web-site, if I ever break-down and buy a computer that's good for something more than a chock (-I'm writing this on someone else's).

Driving to Indiana (or Lynchburg) or alot of other neat places, would be great if I could afford it. When I hit the lottery . . . or maybe for some good vintage C & O movies!

I believe there is some video footage available with C&O steam- JMJ Productions has a series of videos copied from old movies made by August Thieme. I have one called "Steam Locos of the Southern, ACL, SAL, RF&P, and L&N" which is pretty good. I'm pretty sure they have one on C&O steam as well. I don't believe JMJ has their own website, but I did a quick search of the web for "JMJ Productions" and found plenty of other sites that carry their videos.

Good Steaming,

As a video producer I can tell you that frankly there just isn't much on C&O. Living in southern Ohio, not far from C&O country, I have never had any steam-era stuff offered, 8mm or 16mm. People think vintage films grow on trees but it doesn't!
We did a very nice 3-tape Canadian series from 16mm, with AUDIO from those trips(all steam), and they have sold only marginally well. These cost a small fortune to produce. The problem with old stuff is everyone wants what ran in their backyard and thats hard to produce.

My father shot a fair amount of 8mm in the mid-late 50's. I asked him once about C&O, and he said it was gone earlier than some railroads like N&W, and it was in a hard to reach region for most folks who had camera equipment. He has shots of steam in Cincy including L&N, N&W, Pennsy,NYC, and B&O, but no C&O! Imagine the drive to some place like Hinton, WV in 1954 from Cincinnati, or from the east Coast. This is why O. Winston Links stuff(stills, movies, and audio) are so rare....nobody went into the heart of those areas, and the only reason he did was he was a professional and had the blessing of the N&W. Luckily for us he preserved what he did!
Also for C&O check out Herron Rail Services in Tampa. Jim may have some C&O mixed in his Glory Machines series.
Steamingly,
Greg Scholl

PS. We are looking for old films...hint hint to produce. Especially looking for Big Articulateds on UP, SP, B&O, C&O, etc. 16mm prefered, but will consider 8mm.

I have a tape, "Articulateds in Appalachia" by Sunday River Productions, has some footage of C&O 1600's, and although the audio dubbing was poor, the views of coal into Hinton are good.

For the record; the boys at the museum have looked up what we have and reported as follows:

CHESAPEAKE & OHIO STEAM LOCOMOTIVES
by JMJ PRODUCTIONS - 1988
51 Minutes long
(described as "black and white footage on all C&O steam classes.")

VIGNETTES OF CHESAPEAKE & OHIO
by CLEAR BLOCK
55 Minutes long
(described as "color footage mostly diesel with some C&O steam")

We also have a privately made steam video with the previously mentioned short segment of our locomotive C&O 2-8-4 #2789 which is not available commercially.

Aw, come on. Hinton may be tough, but the C&O aint exactly the RGS over Lizard Head Pass. The main goes thru Charleston... Not one movie camera in the state capitol city!?! or anywhere between Richmond and Columbus...?

There's gotta be stuff that somebody shot. Maybe some widow that doesn't realize what it is.

I happen to know of (and have seen twice) several big reels of fantastic 16mm READING footage, of which we only got a little nibble on GLORY-MACHINES 1. Why the rest was never released . . .who knows.

There must be C & O stuff out there undiscovered.

Anyone from C.P. Huntington NRHS reading this ??
C & O Historical Society ??

If we can't dig up anything, we'll have to settle for another month of ACE-3000 tests, like in January '85. Next time lets use the 1601 or 1604.

Okay, you find it let me know, and we'll work with you or whomever to get it out there! Don't forget to include the natural sounds with that superb 16mm film too! We don't want none of them fake sounds do we!
