I've been reading "The Locomotives That Baldwin Built," by Fred Westing, and found an interesting passage about a stationary engine that Matthias Baldwin built to power his tool shop (before he began making locomotives). According to the book, it served many different departments over the years as the business expanded. At the time of the book's printing (1966, I believe), this engine was "still in good order and carefully preserved at the Works." I seem to recall that what remained of both the Broad Street and Eddystone complexes have long since been demolished. Have the past 38 years been kinder to this engine? If so, where is it housed today? If it still exsists, what an amazing piece of history it must be to behold.

I suspect, though don't know for a fact, that if it were preserved, it would be at the "Franklin Institute" in Philadelphia. They seemed to have a very close relationship with Balwin. The engine, 60,000 (three cylinder compound 4-10-2), that Balwin built as a demonstrator and couldn't sell wound up there. Also, Mr. Westing was "associated" with the Institute at the time he wrote the book you are enjoying.
