I am looking for a list that might be around of the steam locomotives that are operable in the US.

Of course, there is

UP 3985

Unfortunately the rest get fuzzy for me or I come up with Southern Steam Program numbers

As I recall, there are:
759 NKP?
765 NKP?

2100 Reading running?

As for the Southern Steam Program, how many are still in operation?

Mike's advice is good, but it would help to know what your parameters are. Potentally operable? Mechanically operable but not currently certified to operate by the FRA? Completely operable, mechanically and legally, right now?

It gets fuzzy fast based on the definitions you choose.

I looked where Mike said and they claim that D&RGW 483 is operational and omit D&RGW 476.

Let's say that Operational is also having been operating in the past 5 years AND is down for repairs.

Let's also define operational as FRA certifiable. (i,e, not Kahului Railroad Company #12 - there has been a lot of discussion over at NGDF about this one being operable but not FRA Certifiable).

How's that?

I'd like to include CRRM D&RGW 318 but her repairs have been going on (on going?) for way too long (10 odd years ?) with no end in sight so I do not feel she would count.

Since you have additional information you could contribute.

Such 'lists' are only as good as the information provided and the interest of contributors to keep it up-to-date.

It would seem that there is insufficient interest in these D&RGW loks for anyone to bother with additional information or updates.

Another locomotive to add to the list is the #1702 at the Great Smoky Mountains RR. It was down summer of 2003, but ran for 2004, and will run in 2005 after some boiler work this winter. The ex-Sou 722 is still in many pieces, but is still very much a live project slightly delayed. . .

Not to speak for another orgainization, but TVRM has both the 4501 and the 630. They have done some amazing work on the 630, and I am looking forward to seeing it run soon. I believe the 4501 is down for boiler issues, but is very much intact and protected. How about an update G. Mark??

I remember seeing the 2716 running in Logansport IN a few years back (I guess about 5 or so), but I believe that was about the last time it ran. It was being operated by the Fort Wayne group I believe. Last I heard on it was that it was back home, intact, but due on a boiler inspection.

Hasn't the D&RGW 476 been down for about 5 years or so? Seems like it went down just after they got the 486 back together in 2000. I know it is still on the slate for repairs, so it will run again.

Well since this was a touchy subject last week I will go ahead and post the current California list. These are locomotives in operation or nearing operation, no park type manufacturers or reproductions. Also no gauge narrower than 24". Some are privately owned and stated such. Others can be seen on a regular or irregular basis. As always the list is subject to ridicule, changes, and updates based on accurate info received.

Both restored Soo line locos should qualify; Mikado 1003 just ran on a photographers charter a couple of weeks ago, and while the status of Pacific 2719 is unclear at the moment (last I heard she was still in Wisconsin, outside, but tarpped) it is my understanding that she has a current Form four, and another ten years left on her tubes.

Let's see, the 611 and 1218 are both stuffed and mounted in Roanoke. 4501 has seen sporadic operation at TVRM but last I heard she's now o/s. 722 is in pieces at Great Smokies with their ex-Army 1702 in operation. 630 is also at TVRM under repair. I think the 750 is stuffed and mounted at Southeastern RR Museum in Atlanta.

Running right now and not on your list is CPR 4-6-4 2816 (is this the only Hudson type operating right now?), the Strasburg engines (31, 89, 90, 475), Graham County 1925, several Shays at Cass as well as their Heisler (their Climax is under repair last I heard). The Greenbrier & Durbin Valley folks also have a nice little Climax running but she's not FRA certified. There's also Lancaster & Chester #40 at New Hope, PA, and Rockton & Rion #203 somewhere in Kentucky or Tennessee. The East Carolina Chapter NRHS has a small 0-4-0T in service near Raleigh, NC. Uh... I think the Arcade & Attica is still running steam, you've also got the CT Valley, the stuff at Steamtown, East Broad Top, I think Conway Scenic is still running that 0-6-0, all the stuff in Ohio, Wilmington & Western's 0-6-0 and 4-4-0... uh... Oh, I think Savannah Roundhouse has got that cute little 0-4-0 running now, though what they can do with it I havent a clue. Oh, yeah, there's also the 0-4-0 at Denton, NC that runs for the Thresher's Reunion the week of July 4 each year. Can't think of any others offhand, but I'm sure I'm missing some.

The Nevada Northern has locomoitve 93 in operation (ALCO, 1909, 2-8-0) Tubes were done in 2001. Locomotive 40 (Baldwin, 1910, 4-6-0) is having her tubes done now. Both locomotives will be operating during the February photo shoots, details www.nnry.com. Locomotive 81 (Baldwin, 1917, 2-8-0) is scheduled for rebuild in 2005/2006. Then there is the steam powered wrecking crane that God willing will be back in operation in 2006. Then last is a steam powered rotary snow-plow scheduled for restoration in 2008/2009.

Now disassembled in the process of Form 4 and operating certification for crossing Louisville Road (FRA territory) once track is laid to the visitors center and insularity is lost. Scott Lindsay is doing the honors so I am sure she will be in better than new condition when the job is done. Our initial reactivation (so many years ago and my web page still isn't updated) was for the purposes of being able to switch things around the roundhouse - GOAT fits on to the TT with all but the heavyweight Pullmans. The only other operable locomotive was the S&A diesel (before the Duck was brough in) and it wouldn't fit on the TT with 223, etc.

PM 1225 is in operation and has duties to pull NORTH POLE EXPRESS trips every wekend from 11/26 to 12/19. NKP 765 is undergoing an overhaul right now but WILL be pulling excursions next year, She is so close to being done that you might as well call her operational. 759 is on display at steam town and is on their "to do" list. RDG 2100 is operational but is stored in St Thomas, Ont for the time being. The rest of the T-HOGS are not operational. SP 4449 is operational and just recently finshed a trip to Montana. That is a good list, locomotives don't have to be as big as 4-8-4s or FRA certified to be consideraded in running condition.

there are a lot of state certified locomotives out and about.
To say nothing of a lot of steam logging equipment and other items that are out there.

no one has mentioned the 5 little 24" locos back in Maine. WW&F10 has just finished a top to bottom re-building that will see her running for many years to come.
