Marquette & Huron Mountain 2-8-0s 22 and 23 on that upper Michigan tourist road in 1964. Locos were ex-Lake Superior & Ishpeming and have since been scattered over the country, with the 22 at Mid-Continent Ry. Museum in Wisconsin and the 23 at Kingston, New York.

By 1969, the engines were mostly stored:

Mostly stored from 1969 all the way until 1984 or so!

One of my first experiences with steam was riding behind #23 (the only one working by that point) out of Marquette in 1980/81. My dad got wind that they wouldn't run much longer, so we went up there.

To say those long lines of LS&I 2-8-0's had an impression on me is an understatement.

What really blows my mind is that, given their condition, how many operated AFTER this. To my knowledge:

#18, #19, #24 - Grand Canyon
#34 - Western Maryland Scenic
#33 (O.K., never was only under M&HM until 1968 or so, but still counts!)-
Hocking Valley Scenic, soon to be again at Ohio Central
#23 -- Under restoration in New York.

And preserved:

#22 at Mid-Continent
#24 at Green Bay
#35 at IRM
#21 -- father son team just got it (sat in Marquette until 2002!)

In fact, I think of all those engine, only one, #32, met an untimely fate, as a shot and momb test for the Air Force, I believe.

Not bad for a bunch of engines that should have all been scrapped at least three different times!

Just as an idle question, when does an engine stop being an "ex - what ever" and become a "current" railroad engine. I.E. when will the Strasburg 475 stop being the ex-N&W 475 and be just the Strasburg 475? I supose that a unique engine will have a harder time than one of the more common types. Just curious as to what defines that threshold.
