Just guessing, I'd say this photo shows SP narrow gauge 4-6-0 No. 9 and its display train being towed up to Laws, California to its final display site, just before the line was abandoned in 1960. Looks like "Little Giant" diesel No. 1 on the other end. Can anyone identify the actual location?

Well, that photo was taken at Owenyo, where the standard gauge "Jawbone" branch connected with the narrow gauge. The track that the engine is being pulled off of is the one that was used to store the locomotives. The buildings in the background help identify the location as Owenyo.

They might be getting the engine and cars ready for the trip to Laws. The tank car (aux. water car) did not go to Laws. The combine/caboose is the one at Laws.

Hey Bob,
When I went to your link and called up the photo, I noted this line at the bottom of the form:
_______________________________________________________
SP #9 at Owenyo, Ca on 3-10-58. The picture was taken by my grandfather, JC Weirich.
_______________________________________________________
Does anyone know if this date matches with a known retirement or display date for #9?

I now see the 1958 date and caption also. Perhaps the train was just being moved out of the way at Owenyo. I believe No. 9 ran briefly in 1959 when the diesel was away for work. The train was donated at Laws in 1960, but I'd have to look at my Slim Rails Through the Sand book to get the exact date.
