Just thought some of you might find this interesting. Here's the site for the Pittsburgh Port Authority's new use of the historic Wabash RR tunnel, which used to exit under Mt. Washington onto a bridge which is long since gone. The city has renovated it and it will now be used as an HOV road. A few interesting pictures if you click around a bit...

Now I sort of wish I would have hiked up there and checked it out before this all started.

For many years in the recent past, idle Port Authority Transit busses were parked inside it to receive that stone drip coating. That might mean that it was paved a while ago.

The Wabash Tunnel is only HOV part of each day. There are times when anyone can use it. But only one direction at a time, it's not quite wide enough for two opposing lanes.

Anybody out there happen to have pics of the tunnel/bridge from it's rail-service days? And am I presuming correctly that the dilapidated bridge supports rising out of the river (I know one is right off where Three Rivers Stadium's gate D used to be) are the supports from this bridge?

The bridge associated with the Wabash Tunnel was directly in line with the tunnel across the Monongahela River. Three Rivers Stadium was on the north shore of the Allegheny River, thus anything over close to it had nothing to do with the Wabash Bridge. The two piers of the Wabash Bridge are still sitting in the Monongahela despite having had no bridge on them since the late 1940s. No one wants to spend the $$$ to remove them. As they're not in the way of either highway, rail, or river traffic, they're likely to remain there for a very long time as a reminder of the P&WV and its predecessors.
