I was just told the local Salt Lake City Fox TV station did a story tonight on a new acquisition by the Heber Valley RR, perhaps a 'luxury dining car' to be restored and put into use by this summer. I didn't catch the story and neither the Fox station nor the Heber Valley website have any information. Can anyone fill in the details?

Sorry for the delay in responding to the inquiry. I had dozed off before the news and woke up as Leno was signing off...went to check on the postings at RyPN...saw your posting and cursed myself for not catching the news story (it was also covered on KSL the local NBC affiliate according to the wife).

I went up to Heber this afternoon and got some pictures of the acquisition which I will post as soon as the daughter gets home and shows me how to squeeze them out of the camera.

Craig Lacey, the HVRR Director, provided the following notice that went out notifying the media of the event.

Heber Valley Railroad Moves Vintage Railcar from Salt Lake to Heber

President of Dunn Oil Company donates 1940’s railcar to be refurbished into a luxury passenger railcar

What: The Heber Valley Railroad will transport a 1940’s railcar from Salt Lake City to Heber City. The railcar will be moved by two trailers provided by Intermountain Rigging and Heavy Haul.

History of Railcar
The railroad passenger car was owned by the New York, New Haven and Hartford Railroad (New Haven) and was used in high-speed service along the East coast. In 1971 it became part of the Amtrak fleet and was subsequently sold in 1985 to Mr. Denny Dunn (president of Dunn Oil Company). For years Mr. Dunn stored the car behind his Salt Lake warehouse and used it as a gathering place to play cards with his friends.

When: Thursday, January 27, 2005
9:00 am to 11:00 am

Where: 1939 South 400 West

Why: The railcar will join the Heber Valley Railroad fleet. Measuring 10 feet by 85 feet, the railcar will be refurbished, inside and out, and converted to a first-class, luxury passenger car that will include an open dining area. The Heber Valley Railroad anticipates the refurbished car will take its first ride along the Heber tracks in 2006.

P.S. because my mother was a Dunn, does that make me half-dunn?

Is that a Saltair open trailer behind the coach? If so, what is the story on it? And what did Heber do with the one they have (or had)?

Thanks!

The Saltair open air car in the photo is the one in Heber, taken after the ex-NH car was moved there.

It is the Saltair excursion car (open air trailer). On Wednesday it was sitting next to the Bamberger just to the northwest of the depot, with the arrival of the New Haven car, it was decided to use the cranes while they were there to move the Saltair car over to trackage to get it into the storage yard and put the CSC #300 (Baldwin O-6-0) brought up from the park in Provo a year and a half ago, on display next to the Bamberger trailer.

Mr. Lacey indicates that there is interest at Heber to deaccess the Saltair car. He says Ogden already has 3 or 4 of them and there is one down in San Diego. Any interest out there?
