What's the story on that?

B&O RRM outsources a fair amount of work to Strasburg, though perhaps they will be sending less out in the future as they have a new built-from-the-ground-up restoration shop of their own coming online.

Strasburg returned the B&O No. 25, AKA "William Mason," shown here as "No. 5," to operating condition for use in the movie Wild Wild West with Warner Brothers paying the tab, and I believe she then went back to Strasburg again for Part 230 compliance work and a little cosmetic de-movie-fication. This photo seems to date from that second visit.

How long has this engine been working in its second (or is it 3rd?) career as steam loco for-hire?

Well, as Kelly notes she was released from Strasburg in June 1998, so I guess you could say that she's been available since then if the project is right. She was also used in Gods and Generals on the Museum's own line.

However, the B&O Museum doesn't actively market her services, and running for hire isn't her main job; she's still an accessioned artifact in the collection, and her main job is really being what she is, and running on special occaisions as part of the museum's interpretive mission.

Again, just my impressions and recollection as a nearby observer--I don't speak for the museum.
