Posting this query I received via email. I will send Carl the link so he can read the responses.

Hello,
I am writing to you in hopes that you might be
able to answer my question or direct it to someone at
the RyPN who might be able to.
For the years 1948 to 1955 I lived on a spur of
the Reading RR running from Shamokin, PA that serviced
a colliery in Trevorton. This daily coal haul ran
through my back yard. But now I can not remember the
kind of loco that was used on this spur. I have asked
this question on a number of different venues and have
come up empty.
Thank you for your help in this.
Carl Mowery

The line he's describing is the Herndon Branch, which ran from Herndon Branch Junction, just west of Shamokin, to Herndon on the Susquehanna River. Treverton was partway down the branch and became the end of the branch when it was truncated in the 1960's. Treverton had coal shippers in the form of some collieries and breakers.

Power before 1948 was likely an I-8 camelback 2-8-0, after 1948 steam power would be either an I-9 or I-10 end cab 2-8-0. Diesel would most likely be one or more Baldwin AS-16 1600 HP B-B road switchers.

This is based on what R.Co. had and was likely to use, rather than personal observation.

1960's ETT shows T-1's could run as far as Dunkelbergers, which included Treverton. Don't think T-1's ever ran on the branch, but door is open to N-1 Mallets and big I-10 2-8-0's if traffic was heavy enough.

Thanks Phil,
I suspect that the locos used on this line were the 2-8-0 configurations with rear cab. I was just a 10 years old at the time in question but I do not remember anything as big as the N-1 Mallet, nor do I remember any camelback configurations.
Do you have any sources that I might get access to that would give info on the tonnage coming out of the mines in Trevorton during the 40s and early 50s? (I am new to this kind of research and do not yet know all the links and sources.)
Thanks again. Carl Mowery (Resident of Trevorton Road 1948-55)

Yes.

Check with RCTHS: http://www.readingrailroad.org/
Their quarterly publication (Bee Line) did a series called "Hard Rock" and Vol. 3 was Trevorton & N. Franklin Col.

It's in issue 3 of 1991 and they want $4.75 for a copy

Click thru publications to the Bee Line index and there it is!
