I read something this morning about this engine coming BACK to Steamtown to be repainted in B&M livery and to serve as a back up for the 3713 when that loco takes over excursion service.

Wasn't this engine scrapped late 2003? Or am I confusing it with another ex D&H RS-3?

I seriously doubt that. But- there was an RS3 scrapped that was a D&H engine, but not the same one you speak of. The current owners of B&M 1508, ex D&H 4075, contacted me last year regarding their intent to paint the engine back to B&M. I have not heard anything from them since.

Hello

I'd be very suprised if this were the case.

I'd heard the 4075 was available on and off for the past few years. I'm pretty sure the 4075 is still with us and it was another D&H RS-3 that went to the big roundhouse in the sky last year. There are a suprising number of them left.

I have seen this unit and found to be remarkably intact, as it includes it steam generator and steam lines. I remember reading that these were added by the D&H after the unit was acquired from the B&M C. 1970 so the unit could protect schedules when the PA's were not available - is this true?

This unit and one other were swapped by B&M to D&H for two D&H RS-3s without steam boilers. The two B&M units (1508 and 1525? I think it was) went to Colonie Shops in 1974 and were rebuilt for service on the NY State-funded Adirondack service-- the PAs were in Boise getting rebuilt.

The 1508's current owner states that the rumor is just that-- an un-founded and un-true story. He got a good laugh out of it!
