Post subject: Netscape RyPN Access Problem
PostPosted: Tue Apr 17, 2001 9:47 am

A peculiar problem has come up resulting form the RyPN server relocation.

Netscape users only (not Internet Explorer) get the Interland welcome screen when they access the site using just http://www.rypn.org. This takes you to the Inteland welcome screen which is http://www.rypn.org/index.htm.

The RyPN home page is at http://www.rypn.org/index.html (note the "l" at the end). If you access the home page at the latter URL (address) you won't get the stupid Interland welcome screen.

Of course, this problem could be resolved by deleting the index.htm (no "l") file, which I have done a half dozen times, and it just keeps coming back. I have a request in to Interland's technical department for assistance.

If you know any Netscape users you might spread the word.

Thanks.

Hume,

I use Internet Explorer and have been having the same problem. I'll now have to go in through my "Favorites" and hopefully not have that problem again. It's a hassle if I have to use someone else's computer which I often do during the day.

Yes, the problem exists with Explorer too.

You can still get around it by typing the explicit URL, to wit:

http://www.rypn.org/index.html

and setting your bookmark/favorite to that address.

And, I'm still waiting for Interland to fix it.

I usually check briefs first and then go to interchange. Just thought I'd let you know that I got an error screen by using the "interchange" button on the briefs index page. It was ok when I went "home" and then hit "interchange".

Hume,

FWIW, I use Netscape 4.6, and entering "http://www.rypn.org/index.html" as the address in the properties of my bookmark file entry for RYPN takes me right to the "welcome" page. The extension "html" won't work for anyone who is limited to the 8.3 DOS file naming convention. Anyone who uses a file system that allows long file names shouldn't have the problem.
