Double Steam on the W & W

Hereâ€™s the notice you asked for last fall.

On May 13 and 14 the W & W will celebrate the History of the Red Clay Valley with activities at Greenbank Mill, Brandywine Springs Park and Marshallton yard. Trains will operate between the Marshallton Shops and Brandywine Springs Park. On Sunday May 15th we will hold a Steam Meets Steam Day and operate between Landenberg Junction and Brandywine Springs Park. Each day trains will depart Greenbank Station every 30 minutes with different consists.

Current plans are:
On Friday we will operate a steam train and the 4662 Doodlebug.
On Saturday we will operate a Steam train and a Diesel Train.
On Sunday we will operate two steam trains. If the planets all line up the 3:00 PM Train will be double headed with engines 98 and 58. Go to our web site for schedule details - www.wwrr.com.

Sounds great. I hope to get down there one of these days. How is the rebuild of the line going??

Track repair is progressing very quickly. Bridge design is another story. Still taking core samples at bridge piers, since October. They are drilling core samples at the last bridge right now.

Will they be rebuilt as steel bridges?

Yes. They will be similar to the two that were built after Hurricane Floyd at Greenbank Mill and Brandywine Springs Park.

Just a word of praise where it is due.

I had the pleasure of attending last years event and it was certainly "worth the trip from anywhere". The W&W is one of number of dwindling tourist railroads that "get it". With a pleasant ride, nice equipment, freindly staff, attractive grounds, informative website and so on, it's one of those places I wouldn't mind bringing a few non-railfans to if the chance occurs. There is no 15 dollar parking fee, run down restrooms or "jukyard out front" that might make a negative first impression. I've said the same things about the WK&S over the years. Keeping in mind the hard luck that has followed the W&W in recent years, thier "product" is even more impressive! Oh, and nice gift shop...

Any word on what the 98 will look like, has it been lettered yet?
