Does anyone know of any little historic or operable engines for sale?I am looking for one to be displayed at a local railroad station!A GE ''Crummy'' or also know as a ''Little Critter'' would be best!

The Connecticut Trolley Museum in East Windsor,CT is selling small locomotives. They have a nice Climax which is fully operational,a 0-4-0 fireless, and two 0-4-0T tank engines. I'll bet the Climax is going to be expensive, but the others should be affordable concidering their size and condition. Sounds like this is just what you are looking for. In no way is that Climax "fully operational". It has not qualified under the new steam rules, and will need tubes and a full boiler survey at the least. And according to one person "in the know," most of the mechanicals are quite worn.

Sorry,didn't realize that much was wrong with it. I saw it two years ago indoor their new building. looked pretty good then. I'd like to think that once an engine is up and running, that routine maintainence will follow and keep it going,hopefully improving upon a basic rebuild to a nicely rebuilt loco.

You guys at Conway know that basic maintenence only prolongs the useful life of any of the systems and components that will, sooner or later, require overhaul after hitting some critical point.

Economic analysis as to what that critical point may be is always an interesting question.Must consider the cost of using rigging more than one time against the remaining life in certain components, projected intensity of operation against anticipated wear and operating schedule - this has been of real interest on 108 lately since we got it from you.

Think of condition of running gear as being a small series of peaks and valleys following a generally downward trending curve. The peaks and valleys are running maintenence such as tightening the brasses in the rods, while the big curve is the wearing out of the whole running gear from overhauled to needing overhaul condition.
