In Flimsies, this :

In line with its toy-country proportions, the state has the world's smallest railway system -- a single 300m double-track line that links into the Italian system. Every now and then an Italian train stops just over the border with a freight carriage for the Vatican, and a set of iron gates slowly opens so the Vatican's small steam locomotive can trundle out to tow it to the Vatican City's one marble-clad station.

STEAM? is this so?

cool!
and steam too!

here is the official Vatican railroad page.

http://www.vatican.va/news_services/press/documentazione/documents/sp_ss_scv/ferrovia/ferrovia_it.html

and since I cant read a word of Italian, I tried running it through the google translator:

http://www.google.com/language_tools

worked ok, but not great..
it looks like the second half of the page is in latin?
no translation for that..

there is an English version of the Vatican webpage, but I couldnt find anything about the railroad on the English side..
they probably only have one page about the railroad, in Italian..

Would this indicate that the black smoke or white smoke emanating from the Vatican might not have anything to do with the election of a new pope ?

To bad this wasn't posted a week ago, an April Fool's joke based on fact doesnt' come around too often

I did the youth hostel on a bicycle thing when I was in High School, and remember distinctly being high up on the Vatican Dome and watching the steam locomotive switch in what i remember being a gondola of coal or the Italian equivalent. Looked like HO gage from up there. There were also lines of retired steam, including some with some sort of return flue arrangement, and a very pretty 4-6-0 switching passenger cars in the Rome yard.

Would that I had been older, wealthier and on my own to experience more of that.

Finally, a railroad I can really model in HO scale! By my calculations you could do the whole thing on a 11 x 2 foot layout. I wonder is Walthers has a Vatican Cornerstone series...

I think we'd all be interested in knowing more about the Vatican railway if anyone can translate. Is it really still steam powered?

I finally found an English translation at:

http://www.sinfin.net/railways/world/va ... nrail.html

I also found the following from the Branch Line News International (ISSN 1354-0947) 1994 archive; online at:

http://www.rinbad.demon.co.uk/1994.txt

Quote:
[BLN 724.051][IT, VA] Rare track in the Città del Vaticano: (Ball 52A1) From the electrified FS line just north of the secondary station Roma San Pietro, a non-electrified connection branches off north along a 120m-long viaduct to reach a doorway in the high wall surrounding the Vatican City. Immediately beyond, behind two heavy doors, lies the passenger reception building of the Vatican railway and, beyond that, sidings converge to a headshunt in a tunnel 100m long beneath the garden of the Vatican's broadcasting station. The branch is 626m long in all. Diesel-hauled trip workings operate twice a day, one with bulk wagon-loads and one with merchandise freight. The doors are rolled back when the train arrives and are closed immediately it has passed through. Once inside, the FS locomotive sets out the loaded wagons and takes away the empties. The passenger building has little resemblance to a real station, consisting mainly of a large reception hall with white marble floor and marble-tiled walls. There are offices, storage rooms and a robing-room for priests and laymen preparing to receive visitors, but no booking-office, waiting-room or restaurant, for it has never been intended as a station for use by the general public.

The building of the railway and the station, at the expense of the Italian state, resulted from a treaty between Italy and the Holy See concluded on 20 December 1933, in turn stemming from the Lateran Treaty of 11 February 1929, by which the Italian government of Benito Mussolini recognised the Vatican as an independent state. The railway opened on 2 October 1934 and was intended for the papal train and for the reception of foreign heads of state arriving at the Vatican by rail. From 1934 to 1994 however the successive Bishops of Rome have personally used their railway only three times. In 1959 the mortal remains of Pope Pius XII were conveyed thence to Venezia; in 1962 Pope John XXIII used a saloon vehicle from the former royal train for a pilgrimage to Loreto and Assisi; and in 1980 Pope John Paul II left in a saloon for a visit to railway staff at a Rome marshalling-yard. (Op de Rails (NL), December 1993)

There's clearly a challenge here for an innovative UK railtour operator - a visit to the Vatican via Eurotunnel, over some off-peak weekend when there's an HST to spare.

1972 or thereabouts.....much of the '70's isn't too clearly defined in my mind for some reason.

Well I hope somebody can post a answer. Seems terribly
unlikely steam still exists. One would think with the
vast crowd in town for the funeral SOMEBODY could
tell us!
I guess Im curious if the smoke from the engine is
black or white. :-)

Does this mean steam has the official seal of the Pope? If it does, does this not also mean that god decrees steam is good?

Cool.

The station was recently converted to a department store, where duty-free goods are sold.
