In many of these photos, notably the first link, the tenders are missing. Were they simply stored elsewhere or perhaps scrapped?

It depended. The thing to note was that tenders could be cut up much more quickly than locomotives; some were chopped into "flat cars" (frames and wheels and naught else) for nearby steel mills for ingot transport, as I recall. Also, some tenders were scrapped before the locomotives simply as a matter of convenience.

The thing to remember is that Dai Woodhams, in addition to the hundreds of ateamers, also ended up scrapping thousands of freight wagons as British Rail freight 1) shifter to newer wagons and 2) diminished in scope dramatically. At times it was all the yard could do to scrap wagons fast enough. That massive influx of traffic, combined with the complexity of scrapping a steamer, is what kept over 200 steamers around long enough for preservationists to act.

Just have to wonder how long that window will stay open in Cuba before the high price for scrap and the Chinese market for it eats the steam locomotives now offered. We are missing our only chance I am afraid.
